This book is so wonderful. Too bad I do not see many books like this on the market. This book is a simple book with lovely pictures on how to make and bake pies and tarts. If you know a young person who aspires to cook/bake, this is the perfect gift for them - a starter book with recipes and step by step pictures, instructions and a final photo for many of the pies/tarts. I found this series of cookbooks in a local bookstore Anne Willan's Look and Cook: Fish Classics, Fruit Desserts, Perfect Pies and Tarts, and Splendid Soups. I absolutely love these cookbooks for several reasons.Each recipe is photographed in vivid color. Each recipe has easy to follow step-by-step directions. Each step is numbered and there is a how-to photo for each step of the recipe.The dishes and recipes are savvy so you'll look like an expert chef. I also like the block style format of each recipe. You get a detailed inventory of the serving size, work time, bake time, or setting time.Each detail of the recipes are listed in block format in columns on the page, e.g., equipment, final product, shopping list, ingredients, order of work, and getting ahead.Each step is formatted left to right for easy preparation. What's really great is that all the equipment and ingredients for each recipe are illustrated or photographed. So if you don't know what it is or what it looks like, you get a picture of it.The cookbooks are exactly what the author claims. Dana's amazing book ripped me right open. I took the "archetype quiz" online, found it interesting, and was compelled to see if the book might be a missing puzzle piece in my journey of healing an autoimmune condition. Upon reading the chapter behind my archetype of a "Nurturer" I read things that truly taught me the WHY behind who I am. I am the child of a mother who was hugely overwhelmed, not attuned to myself or my brothers, struggling from mental health issues and an alcoholic. To my surprise, apparently MANY "Nurturers" have similar upbringings that have led to hormone imbalances (me), systemically gaining weight throughout their bodies (me!), and tend to comfort eat (me!!!). I truly thought as a "Nurturer" who puts people first that that's just who I was - a kind, sensitive, and empathetic person that wants to help others. While I was aware that this affected my upbringing tremendously, it was Dana's amazing writing and "archetypes" that showed me how the relationship with my mother, biological makeup, and eating are entirely intertwined - and upbringing can truly alter (and manifest) your biologic makeup and approach to eating. This book gave me crystal-clear insight into myself that literally TEN years of therapy hasn't unearthed.The Archetype Diet combines functional medicine, nutrition therapy, and mindfulness principles seamlessly, and I am so glad I stumbled upon this gem. I hope it brings you as much clarity as it brought me - or at least, a little more clarity into who you are at a very fundamental level underneath all of our layers.

Please don't allow the word "diet" in the title deter you. This book is insightful, progressive and way more than just a nutritional health plan. DIET AND EXERCISE ALONE WILL NOT NECESSARILY CHANGE YOUR BODY. For years, I've had a very "clean" diet, exercised regularly, and have not been able to get excess weight off. We all have psychological patterns that show up in our bodies - and Dana James guides you to discover the deeply rooted issues behind our physical appearance to become a more well-balanced person. I highly recommend this book.

What is different about this book is that it combines nutrition with psychology in a unique way. According to James, the fundamental question that is driving our eating and drinking choices is: "From where do you derive your self worth?" James asserts that there are four archetypes: Nurturer, Wonder Woman, Femme Fatale, and Ethereal. One of these archetypes has the clue for where you and I derive our self worth and how that impacts our food (and beverage) choices. There is of course a quiz to help figure out your dominant archetype but you can take that on James' website. Nurturers derive self worth from how they care for others. Wonder Women (me) derive it from accomplishment, with the rallying cry for bad food behavior of "I deserve this!" I now understand why I have briefly succeeded on diets but why I have never been able to maintain the diet and therefore the weight loss--I never got to the issue of self worth at the core. Here's the gist, quoting from the Introduction: "Source of Self-Worth--> Change in Behavior-->Change in Eating Behaviors-->Change in Hormones-->Change in Body Shape. Traditional diet programs focus on how your eating behaviors affect our body--change your behavior, change your body shape--but they fail to consider the beginning of the cycle. Yes, if you eat nutrient-dense foods that rebalance your hormones and help your body function properly, you will loose weight. But if you don't change how you use food (e.g., as a reward, distraction, desensitizer, comfort or punishment), and more important, why you use food in this way, you will eventually revert to eating the same way you always have, ending up frustrated because you 'know better.' You can't master step three in the cycle until you understand how you got there." Excellent book. And yes, I'm losing weight because I'm changing my food behaviors and I'm able to change my food behaviors because I'm choosing to derive my worth in new ways. Losing weight is nice but feeling like I'm not being ruled by my food moods is even better.

This book is groundbreaking and a must read for any woman who struggles with body image, emotional eating or self-worth. I took the quiz and was completely floored by the results. I had thought of myself and food/body challenges so differently for years and this was incredibly eye opening. I got new insight on past and current struggles and how they fit with my childhood and how I evaluated my own self-worth. This book does a great job of providing information based on scientific facts and research combined with Dana's knowledge acquired from years of experience working with women, their emotions and values. The author's true desire to help women shift relationships with food and body is apparent in this book. It's well written, informative and real. Best book I've read to date on women, food and self-worth. Highly recommend it!

The Archetype Diet is a breath of fresh air in the world of diets. Through this brilliant concept of Archetype discovery, the reader is walked through a practical journey that leads to total body transformation, self appreciation and ease. As an expert in the field, I was skeptical at first, but hands down this is my #1 recommendation to ANY woman looking to loose weight.

I have tried following the recommendations in this book, but I have determined that some of the information just doesn't work for me. I fit too much into two categories, and the differences make it somewhat contradictory, so I found this to be unnecessarily complicated. Also, I am not prepared to run out and have expensive tests done. It may be great for those who have the resources to work directly with a professional, but using this in a broad/general sense is not really as effective as I needed. Glad if it works for some.

As a fan of the Star Trek series and as someone working in AI, this book was the obvious choice for me when I noticed it during a casual trip to the bookstore. There are 14 chapters on the characteristics we tend to associate with intelligent beings (e.g. sensing the environment, thinking and reasoning, imagination and creativity). In each, the author relates to episodes from the entire Star Trek series to date (i.e. the original series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Enterprise). Since I have seen all of them (except the original series), the explanations were familiar to me. It was also a nice refresher of certain episodes that I might just watch again. There is very little in this book in terms of technical information (thankfully, as AI can be quite complicated and mathematical) but a lot in terms of ideas and basic concepts. Dilettantes and fans of Star Trek would therefore enjoy this book more than academics and researchers. I have nothing against science fiction or television and I think many times, directions for further research can be inspired by it. This is why I still consider this book a contribution to the field. Overall, a worthwhile and light read.Some minor errors in case there is a 2nd edition.1. pg. 46, para 2, "pheromone trails" (not 'trials').2. pg. 81, the second formula is the same as the first when it should be different i.e. p(success) cannot be the same as p(failure).3. pg. 88, based on the second premise (i.e. It's temperate is always 50 degrees or above), the sentence in the following paragraph should be, "...any planet with a temperature of *less than* 50 degrees..." I think that for a lot of us, at least at some point in our lives, faith means dutifully going to Church and mindlessly repeating the same prayers, that is without actually paying attention to what we hear or say. Theological treaties tend to be very intricate and keen on details for lay persons to follow. In between these extremes, there are Father Jim's books on Jesus. Not only that they are very nicely written and always with at least a tiny bit of humour, but they are extremely useful in this one thing: opening our eyes and ears and waking us up from the mindless trance so that we actually think, actively think, about Gospels, about our prayers and ultimately about our faith.

Jesus understands. For me, this is the central message of Fr. James Martin, SJ’s newest book SEVEN LAST WORDS: AN INVITATION TO A DEEPER FRIENDSHIP WITH JESUS. Meditating on and praying about each phrase brings me closer to Jesus, who is already reaching out to all of us in our human condition. This book is a great resource for Lent and to read throughout the year when facing emotional and physical pain.I particularly appreciate Fr. Jim’s historical interpretation and the way he shows us Jesus’ humanity and divinity, including Jesus’ ministry of joy. This well-rounded picture of Jesus makes him more accessible. This book has brought my prayer life to a new level.

I passed this wonderful meditation onto others so that they may enjoy the depth of the spirituality of James Martin, S.J. He brings a depth to these words that gives us an opportunity to delve into the mystery of who Christ is both in his eyes and on our own journey. One of the spiritually brilliant priests in my parish has shared his meditation on Good Friday that kept people in Church praying for another half hour. We are blessed with the guidance of people who have worked hard and enjoyed their relationship with Christ and His people.

The perfect kickoff to my Lenten goal of reading more to further understand Jesus. So glad that God called James Martin to use his exceptional talent and approachable nature to help inspire others. Really great read, made me wish I could have heard these sermons live at St. Patrick's.

Whenever I read one of Father Martin's books, I feel as though we have met for a cup of coffee and are chatting as old friends. Father Martin has a way of making his message personal to the reader and applicable to daily situations. I read Seven Last Words for devotionals during Lent; however, it would be appropriate anytime. Father Martin guides the reader to seek deeper meaning from the few phrases that Jesus spoke while dying on the cross. Not only does Father Martin explore the significance of the words as they relate to Jesus's life and final moments, he uses them to teach us how we can have a closer relationship to Christ. The dual aspect of Christ as Divine as well as a human being is emphasized throughout the book, that Christ understands the challenges and trials that we all face as human beings. The book is not lengthy and accessible for wherever you are in your spiritual journey. The message is both inspiring and comforting. I highly recommend this book.

This is a brilliant, inspiring and grace-filled book by the extraordinary Catholic writer and priest Fr. James Martin. Based on a sermon he gave on Good Friday 2015 at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City, the book succinctly--but with incredible wisdom and perception--explains each of the seven last words (really sentences) of Christ as he hung on the cross.Christians believe that Christ was fully divine AND full human. This little book goes far in explaining this mystery. Christ's humanity, including the agonizing physical suffering of the Crucifixion, his abiding love for his mother, his feelings of abandonment by God and even his thirst on the cross, link him to us in a basic human way.This would be an excellent book to read on Good Friday and can easily be read in a single day (even by not-so-fast readers).Best of all, Fr. Martin writes for everyone--not just Roman Catholics. This book is such a blessing!

Beautiful meditations, sometimes just plain entertaining. Martin can write, for sure. I listened to the audio book, then played a chapter for my Bible study group and they were so enthusiastic that even after Easter we are reading the rest of it together. It's a particularly short book, which is good for a group reading aloud and commenting every few paragraphs. It's very easy to do a chapter in one session.Martin gives good insights as to the seven last statements as recorded in the Gospels -- for instance, in the chapter on "I thirst," he goes into some detail about how Jesus had a body, just like we do: he got colds and stomach aches, splinters, tired feet, etc. He even threw up! This sounds rather indelicate in a review, but Martin has just the right touch and the right tone. I highly recommend it.

What a great book! I just finished reading it and I will read it again. It is perfect for Lent or any time of year you need inspiration. It is easy reading and lifts you up so that you understand Jesus is just like us and understands us very well. I love this book and highly recommend it.

This book is not intended to be a definitive history of Area 51. What it is is the best collection of pictures taken at the Groom Lake Base. About half the book is dedicated early operations and the U2 program. The next third concerns the various Lockheed blackbird models, and the remainder is everything else. You won't find anything UFO related here. The pictures are well-annotated. Nobody knows this stuff better than Peter Merlin. He has been a dedicated aviation historian for more than two decades. There are plenty of pictures of Soviet planes that were evaluated at Groom. Until this book, I had never seen pictures of a stealth cruise missile called Senior Prom which was a contemporary of the F-117's predecessor, Have Blue. There are pictures taken inside two bars at the base, Sam's Place and the Conehead Bar. You don't need to worry about current military technology being compromised by this book. The only aircraft picture that dates since 1990 is of the Boeing 737-600 "Janet" aircraft, but that picture was taken at their terminal in Las Vegas. This fairly small book is a must-have for the wonk, and it would be an interesting read for any aviation enthusiast.Rumor has it that Peter Merlin is planning a more comprehensive Dreamland/Area 51/Groom Lake book. I'm looking forward to it.

Once again, Peter Merlin shows us he is the "authority" on matters regarding Area 51. Many of these photos are unique, being full size versions already seen in other aviation histories.

As a book gift, this is nice. It's high quality, great photos and isn't flashy like most books about this subject. However, there's nothing in here that's new nor is it interestingly told in a way that makes me recommend this book as a "must have".

I love these great tales of engineers facing problems and coming up with complex, multi-faceted, yet elegant solutions. The pictures, though, are what make this a great book and a good buy. This book is packed with imagery that the aviation fan will pore over for hours. Learn the stories of these fantastic marvels of aeronautical engineering that were designed and tested by moonlight, and see for yourself what it looks like to build an aviation legacy!
