Simply put, Cioran can, if one reads him with a truly open mind, challenge onesheretofore unquestioned belief systems, whether it be religious, political, social interactions, or say creativity. The writing style does demand careful and focused reading ( and in my case, rereading ).

I love this book .

Nice little quotes to put one to sleep, they do calm me down believe it or not. I realize when reading this I may not be as crazy as I was thinking and everyone was telling me. The reason this gets only four stars is that he makes all sorts of claims about "god", reality and such that he cannot know. It makes him sound a little silly at times. Like a petulant infant that has a bone to pick with existence and doesn't care about the facts. I wish he'd just stick to those facts. When he does he's got a great knock out punch

Deep thoughts by this 20th century native Romanian, French transplant philosopher. A beautiful mind, with the soul of a poet, Cioran has been labelled a pessimist, though he paints his pessimistic philosophy in the most beautiful language. A true product of the world wars that ravaged Europe in the first half of the 20th century, and the reconstructed world views they left in their wake.

Cioran anticipates the foolishness of the 21st century as he reviews the decline of European nations one by one. The individual, even one who would rise above it all, is not spared. Bashes philosophers (and novelists) all, from Nietzsche to St Paul.

Gift.

Emil Cioran suffered from insomnia for years and this twilight state of mind revealed the monstrous nature of everything and so laid the emotional and philosophical foundation for his exquisite rambling on the glum; and so would you, if you couldn't sleep.Insomnia is a way of perturbing the mind and forcing the insomniac to awaken to the world as it is. Corian this and knew that he saw different. Some people can see further. If you fly over your home-town, on Google Earth, you notice the higher vantage point straight away. You would never have guessed that there where so many trees surrounding your hometown if you stayed on Earth. Zoom out a little and the view becomes higher. Now you see mountains and seas. You apprehend more because you are high. When you come back down, try explaining what you have seen to your friends. Chances are, if your friends have never risen to those heights themselves, they won't believe you. You will then get thrown into the cooking pot!Corian flew too high and they dragged him back down. he looked down into the insomnia flash, he witnessed grandeurs beyond grandeurs, chasms over chasms, deeps beyond deeps. Just like in mathematics where there are infinitudes of higher orders infinitely transcending lower infinities, so the phenomenon of consciousness can no longer be confined to the play pen we exist inside. Rather, your consciousness is a revelation of infinities overlapping your normal, hum-drum, pay that mortgage, monkey mind.SO, Corian argued, rest are sleepers. Corian argued that his insomnia was a perturbation of his faculties and this is why he said thay it is truer to the human condition to write about the black, than it is to clap about optimism, clapping like demented seals at something we can't understand, or getting all wet and hot over science, like a silly schoolgirl. Corian saw behind these thick veils of optimism. The optimistic world view will never deliver on the promise. The darkening of colour that optimism causes in our lives only adds to our despair. Work for that mortgage and you work on your mausoleum. Intelligent people choose optimism instead of recognising the fragile foundation inside.Emil Cioran saw the world as a machinery of hell, and the person, limited in time and space, a gasp of pain between birth and death; can never be happy in hell. Our world is a big cruel mistress with a whip; the conditions of her arising make happiness impossible. Life is fragile and insecure, with little purpose but to be born, gasp and die. But what of salvation? The shattered God still dwells in the ruins; but He is a ghost who is never to be taken seriously again because no one believes in him anymore, like Father Christmas, a skeleton of stones among the ruins of the world. History confirms the evil, so says Emil Cioran, and science argues that we are all empty space anyway, or biological robots and, to paraphrase Marc Antony, optimists have neither the wit, nor the words, or action, nor utterance, nor the power of speech, to stir men's blood. Choose nihilism, she is full of meaning. Life has no meaning. If you like the above then you will love Cioran. Emil Cioran employs brilliant aphorisms and witty insights into idiocy to supply some much needed glum in a wasteland of shining happy Simon Cowell people.
