I really love this book. Such a great resource to have when performing German Lied and wanting an accurate translation of your piece. In addition, I could not have been more satisfied with Amazon's customer service. I ordered two copies, one for me and the other for a friend. One of the copies came damaged and I filed a return with Amazon. Well within 10 minutes I received an email from Amazon telling me that they were overnighting a new copy to me (free mind you), and to keep the old copy at not additional charge. This is why I shop with Amazon.

750 beautiful poems . I am learning German . The German is on the left and English on the right so it is perfect for learning new vocabulary . A bonus is the essay on Lieder by the author . I listen to his youtube videos of these Lieder to learn correct pronunciation .

How lucky we are to find such a great treasure! I am so grateful to Fischer=Dieskau for fulfilling this great need for music lovers everywhere, including me: Now to treasure the great Lieder and being able to know what the German poetry means by the translation to English...I have it all! It is far more than 1 + 1 = 2....The result is countless! It also makes the perfect gift to any music lover, especially someone who loves the Lieder. One of the best purchases I have ever made!Carl Baum, Palo Alto, CA

Everyone who wants to be serious about singing lieder must have this book. Fischer-Dieskau was an authority on the performance of lied and his knowledge is refreshing and much needed for the best interpretations

Wonderful to read the translation of lyrics while listening to the songs. DFD was greatest singer in my book.

I got this book for the text of lieder, of which it has 75 in both German and English. It's a fine selection plus as couple of essays, one by Fischer-Dieskau himself which makes me wants to explore the realm beyond Schubert,Schumann, Brahms, and Wolf. It goes very well with the complete Schubert lieder on Cd which I also got from Amazon. Thank you!

The kindle edition was very difficult to use because the indexes are not hyperlinked to the text. Otherwise, this is a substantial collection. Some major omissions. I couldn't find R Strauss's Befreit.

My daughter was very happy to receive this book. It is a part of her "Forever collection" and it savesher lots of time looking info up on the web.

i don't like this particular book because it is a poor reprint of a 1946 book... a number of the illustrations (and there are many) are illegible due to the poor reproduction...finding a better printing of this book would be rewarding, but i suppose what can you expect for a reprint? the content is dated, but useful and instructive for tooling and general principles - well written and understandable for the novicethat said, much better to buy a used one of these books - the price of a new reprint isn't worth it

I've been trying to go through this book for the past couple of weeks since getting it and this is what I can tell you from my experience so far...The first few chapters go over basics like what your work area should look like, be lit, what tools to use, how to use then BAM!!! The book goes right into how to take a watch apart. I like to understand something really well before I make an attempt at doing it which is what I tried to do with this book. I finally got frustrated when I got to the part of the book that started to explain how to take apart the balance wheel and how the escapement works. I couldn't get past a certain page after reading it five times. That's when it occurred to me that it might help me understand what I'm reading if I actually try to take apart a watch. So I gave it a go...Yes, that's how you can get the most out of this book. Sure, you can read all about "run to the banking" and the theory of how the escapement works but it won't sink in until you actually start taking a watch apart (it's akin to swimming, sure I can tell you how to swim freestyle but until you actually get into the water, you won't know how to kick properly and use your arms together). Yeah, I royally screwed-up the balance spring on the watch that I was taking apart but I learned a LOT in that hour with the help of the book than if I were to only read the book--or God forbid--I try to take a watch apart without any kind of guidance. So it's a "read the section a couple of times and then try to do it on a watch" type of approach that helped me.This book has a TON of information so try to not get dismayed/bogged down by it's detail. An example of this is how you can adjust the run to the banking by either bending pins (if that's how the watch is is designed) or by cutting away at the movement case and bending the remaining metal acting as a "pin" to either lengthen or shorten the run. In reality, when you're taking apart your first watch you're probably not going to be focusing on diagnosing a problem and figuring out what you need to do to repair the watch right away. I just don't know if everyone is necessarily trying to fix their first watch as much as they are trying to learn how a watch works and how the parts all fit/work together. So you have to know what to take in deeply and what you can casually read and use as reference later. A newbie with lots of enthusiasm can use this book but it won't be easy to follow. It's a great book with tons of information but I have to admit that I got another book that should be arriving today that has the term "beginner" in the title.

Let's start by saying that if you are looking for colorful high-resolution photographs or how to perform basic watch repair operations - this is not the book.Unless you are a certified watch repairer, this book will likely take you from a beginner level (or like me, from an online watch repair school grad) to the next level. You already need to know about the mechanisms and concepts of a mechanical watch to get the maximum benefit from this book. You may read sections several times, each time getting more insight and information.Every section of the book is really excellent. I reference the section on interpreting timegrapher results constantly... at least until it's all memorized and understood. I'm currently reading the chapter on the pallet fork and escape wheel for the third time and can see it's going to require another 2-3 times through it to fully appreciate all the subtleties.

Keep in mind that this book was first written in 1946 and additions made to it up until 1963. With that being said, this has got to be the complete encyclopedia of watch making at the time of writing it. The author, Donald E. Carle is no doubt an authority of horology. The language he uses is old British and a little hard to understand in places and some of the equipment and materials he advises are no longer available or have been found to be health hazards in today's world. This book contains a wealth of information, but unless you are a professional horologist and willing to invest 10's of thousands of dollars in tools and equipment it has more information than you will ever use. But it does contain everything and I mean everything that you could possibly want to know about vintage mechanical watches. I guess the author assumes that the reader already has considerable experience in watch repair by the layout of the book. It starts out discussing needed tools and then by chapter 3 it explains completely disassembling a wrist watch movement. The steps he uses are not what I would recommend. The first thing he suggests removing on the back of the movement is the balance wheel assembly, which in my opinion has got to be the most difficult part of watch disassembly of all. Unless you have an extreme amount of previous experience, you will permanently trash your watch by starting at this point. The balance wheel assembly is very delicate and easily damaged. In the time period this book was written replacement parts may have been readily available. That is not the case today. The majority of the parts for these vintage watches are no longer made in today's market place and finding a replacement part can in some cases be close to impossible. He does explain how to make or repair some parts of a watch, but without the specialized tools needed to do this, it would be impossible to do today and finding those specialized tools would be a difficult task in itself and very expensive. Overall, I would highly recommend this book if you want to learn extensive watch repair.

If you are interested in old mechanical watches, this is a fantastic book. Very detailed. It was published in the 40's I think, so it is not a current book, but the theory and lots of basic tips of how to work are very good. Excellent beginners book on older watch repair. He even tells you how to make some of the tools you will need. Should give you a good foundation in the process.

I like history books and enjoy the unusual angle which this author takes to discuss politics and culture in the early colonial period. The book is easy to read and generally kept my interest piqued. There were a few times where I felt that the author was rambling a bit and over analyzing a particular point but that never last for more than a couple of pages before it turned interesting again. One thing I had not anticipated is just how much the book focuses on law, including the development of common laws and statutes and discussion on how the local courts came to be, and how judges and jurors were selected, with lots of case examples used for context. Notwithstanding the title, I had not expected that law was the primary topic of the book, which it really is - the story of Anne Orthwood is more secondary.Overall, I do feel this book added to my knowledge and understanding of the past in a way that other history books do not. It reinforced a lot of what I have already learned about the time period, and added other insight. For example, there was quite a bit (relatively speaking, given the small populations) of unmarried sexual encounters in 1600s, and often the fathers would deny paternity and (if the mother died or was poor) leave the child to be sent off to involuntary servitude while still an infant. So, in essence, lots of children grew up having no parents and no family to call their own - I had not thought of that happening in the late 1600's. Strange how men would place so much emphasis on family and religion, and at the same time completely abandon their own child because admitting to a sexual encounter with a lower class female would hurt their reputation.Overall, highly recommended. While it was not a book that I 'could not put down'- it was one that I looked forward to reading each evening until I finished.

I read this book for a college class and, holy cow, is it good. Pagan uses a series of court cases arising from a tryst in early colonial Virginia to open a window into the culture then under construction. The colonial authorities either modified or enforced English law in a manner deemed appropriate for the new environment they found themselves in. How and why they did it is extremely fascinating. Pagan mentions in his conclusion that the underlying story is operatic in its dimensions and he isn't lying. The text is a slim 150 pages so this would be a perfect book to buy for people who want to introduce themselves or their lives ones to the joys of historical scholarship. It is interesting enough for the lay reader and meaty enough for professional historians.

I had to read this book for a constitutional history class in college. Unlike other history books this was an easy read. It's more of a narrative than fact after fact. The author strays off sometimes on things that don't seem so important. But the story is fascinating and I learned a lot about this time period. I'd recommend this book.

This dissertation by law student John Ruston Pagan is a legal history of sexual mores in Colonial Virginia and an examination of the hybrid of English law and a fairly organized colonialized body of men who presided with an ability to rule without only prejudice. Pagan narrates through different chapters on the different people involved, but with little courtroom, literally rooms in an inn, drama, the narrative relies on biography of Orthwood, her paramour John Kendall, and others like their castoff son Jasper Orthwood, who is not a central subject throughout the book. He is an afterthought, based on Pagan’s analysis of legal sensibilities in the 17th century more than personal plight. Orthwood came from England, was indentured and was in a contemporary fit when she met Kendall during only one weekend in eastern Virginia. What would become of Kendall becomes the prominent emphasis, because Orthwood would die of complications a few days after her son was born but Kendall had his prominent uncle’s reputation to confront. Lieutenant Colonel William Kendall was typical in his roll of wanting to protect his nephew’s image because it was his own by extension. However, the 17th century was, although pure regarding bastard births, tainted in regards to shotgun weddings. “Pre-marital sex was common,” Pagan writes, reporting that a quarter of all marriages involved pregnant women. “Only 1-2 percent of births occurred out of wedlock.” The conflict within the court was based on two different Latin terms, not worth repeating here, but they represented a seller’s rights versus a buyer’s. Waters vs. Bishopp was a case of connected landowner versus a poor trader, with Waters thought to be enabled by his status among the “JP”s. But the case went to a jury, which stood to benefit the poorer Bishopp, the seller of a product that “to my knowledge” was ready for the work she was being sold to do. It is a primitive question, and somewhat a shame that even back then the legal system had to rule with certainty that which could not be determined with certainty. Bishopp maintained that he had no knowledge that he was selling the indenture of a pregnant woman. When Orthwood delivered her twins, only one surviving, only eight months after the days she confessed to having been with Kendall, the court was led to believe that Bishopp should have been more considerate of the “goods” he was trafficking. As Pagan concludes, Virginians wanted to trust in what they were buying, fading away from the scrupulous “buyer beware” precedent. Again, this was the focus of the study, not actually the mother or the son, but who could loosely be considered their “owners”. The book had a novelty quality too, mostly based on various instances of laws against fornication. “Dressed in a white sheet and carrying a white rod, the offender had to confess before the congregation during service time on Sunday or a holiday. Failure to perform … resulted in excommunication.” Lawyers are legitimate in the book, if present. Here is one instance of medical quackery on page 52: “Roger and Anne Moy had to bind themselves into servitude to pay [Dr.] Stringer’s 1,200 pound bill” for a cure upon both of their bodies. “(The patients survived the cure but came to a bad end anyway: in 1653, Anne was sentenced to death for murdering Roger.)”

Who would have guessed that Colonial Virginia was one giant daytime television show? It's amazing that the Victorians managed to pretend that respectable people weren't interested in sex. This book is a great reminder of the opposite --before them and after them it was a gigantic aspect of visible society.

Provided unknown to me early history of colonial Virginia.

Very interesting .... allows the careful reader to draw parallels between the politics and society of the Orthwood case and recent political efforts to control social behavior, especially that of women.

This is a well researched and well written book. A tiny slice of Virginia history that will appeal to serious historians.
