This book is not intended for professional programmers, and that's a very good thing for the rest of us. His primary motivation is to help readers understand how large amounts of data and information can be readily analyzed using Python. Another good point - he tells us that Python vocabulary is a rather small set of 'reserved words' with special meaning to Python. Unlike English, there is no ambiguity about what these words mean in Python.Severance then describes how to start a conversation with Python - after first installing the Python software on your computer. Much/most of that information is offline, accessible through a link he provides. Continuing, >>> is Python's way of asking 'What do you want me to do next?' and the need for parentheses surround the description of what you want your computer to do. Python, like other programming languages, is very picky about syntax. Then on to labeling/describing data to be used. Etc.Overall, this book is a good overview for someone seriously interested in becoming a python programmer, not so good for someone just wanting to get a sense of what Python can do and how it would go about accomplishing such.

Excellent! The book is definitively for beginners who have no idea or know nothing about Python before. The author mixes basic concepts, without going deeply enough in some subjects. In addition, author provides teaching materials online pythonlearn.com. You can design your own learning path while having fun to navigate through the online course.I have learnt many programming languages and read many books how to program. This is my favorite one because it is the easiest to read. The coding examples are easy to understand for the beginner. I am highly recommending this book for all non-programmers who want to learn the programming concept and to understand how program code works.

There is no answer key for the exercises in this book. There is also no answer key if auditing the course at coursera. The only way to get the answers or grading is through the fully-paid version at coursera. There are deliberate trick questions that the text does not address, almost forcing a student to buy the paid version. For example, chapter 2 exercises require certain input() and float() expressions that the text does not address. Spent about two hours finally getting it, but only with internet searches. I paid $10 for the printed book instead of the free e-book, and one would think the $10 book would at least provide an answer key. In summary, this is a deliberate attempt to confuse a student and nearly force him or her to upgrade to the paid version in order to get the correct answers to the exercises.

The simplest and clearest explanations out of nearly a dozen introductory python texts I have collected. Artfully crafted instructional progression with by far the most relevant and amusing analogies and example cases. It is interesting to note that this is basically the third formal edition of a constantly improving open-source resource that was initially restructured and reworked by a very gifted teacher to teach data analysis and data mining; if you have tried to work through Think Python you should be able to recognize the refinement resulting from the writer's having used previous editions of this text to teach tens of thousands of students. I keep going back to this book as a reference as well. It really does contain the concisest explanations, and I am recognizing more and more that the code blocks and larger processing methods he describes are paragons of industry approaches. Starting here will make your life so much simpler and your learning immediately so much more productive: you won't get lost in all the technical asides and theoretical maelstroms so many datascience Python texts seem to love to spin into and through. (I have also found the text to be a very helpful foundation for integrating all the open source videos and resources the author put together while teaching his classes through Coursera [and the University of Michigan]).- A data analyst from a non-datascience background learning Python for the first time.

I purchased this book because it was required for online Python courses taught by the author. I have not found a better beginner Python book out there. Plus, now that I am a professional Python programmer, I find myself constantly referring to this book to clarify certain points and reinforce understanding of basic principles. (I may be a professional, but I'm still a rookie.) I've purchased a few fat, expensive Python programming books with animals on the cover, but these tend to collect dust. In short, I have a new-found appreciation for this book and how much work went in to writing it. Thanks, Professor Severance!

Good intro to Python. Great companion and resource for the Coursera Python courses. The author and instructor is a master, making it easy to learn basic programming principles and Python.

Amazing! I'm shocked and grateful that people put this material out. Such a high quality product (the book plus the podcast). I can't believe these lessons are next to free! Great way to learn Python. Very accessible and efficient with learning time.

I have used several books and most are about the same. They get you to a certain point and then you don’t know how to get to the next level. This one takes you through the whole process from start to finish of completing a project that you can use. Pair this book with the Professor’s videos on Amazon and you will have a great learning experience!

tl;drI'm giving this 5 stars for the content in consideration of the authors. As for the Kindle format and O'Reilly's decision to not sell PDFs ZERO stars.Long story: I need to learn C# so decided this book would be good. Upon heading over to O'Reilly I discovered the uproar over their decision a few months ago to stop selling PDFs. WOW! - I some response to the uproar about them looking into providing PDFs as part of their Safari Subscription service - but as I couldn't find a link to purchase the PDF and I'm not interested in a $400 subscription I decided to try the Kindle version.I've got at least a hundred Kindle books in my library - all non-technical book - e.g. novels, non-fiction etc. I love the Kindle platform. But as I have discovered it has problems with technical books. The first problem is that it does not allow you to scroll pages. As a programmer you often need to see ON ONE SCREEN a section of code. Unfortunately, with Kindle (I'm using kindle on a mac) you can only see page n or page n+1. You cannot view the bottom half of page n and the top half of page n+1. For a general reading book this is not a problem. For studying code or long tables it is frustrating.Second problem is with cut and paste. Programmers often read parts of technical books and then copy some section of the code from the book and then paste it into their development environment (e.g vi / Vistual Studio / whatever). Unfortunately this simply does not work as expected. Here's an example line code as displayed in the Kindle reader:Task.Run (() => Console.WriteLine ("Foo"));Here's how it ends up pasted (either into a terminal window with vi running Visual Studio)Task.Run (() = > Console.WriteLine (" Foo"));Albahari, Joseph; Albahari, Ben. C# 7.0 in a Nutshell: The Definitive Reference (Kindle Locations 16438-16439). O'Reilly Media. Kindle Edition.Notice the additional line showing the author, title, etc. Now that is annoying but I can relatively easily delete that line and go about my work. The more insidious problem is the insertion of a space inserted between the "=" and the ">" characters (e.g. => vs. = >)This is a syntax error and causes this line of code to not compile and is not that easy to spot - especially when you are trying to learn a new language! You can imagine the *fun* that ensues when several or dozens or more lines end up with numerous syntax errors. You end up fixing bugs due to a broken copy/paste function ! (also notice the extra space character added before Foo - "Foo" vs " Foo" - while not a syntax error this could introduce a logic error - even worse and harder to debug than a syntax error)In conclusion, in my opinion, the Kindle format (at least as produced by O'Relly ?) is not a substitute for the PDF format for technical books.

This is a fantastic book, whether you're new to C# or are an experienced C# developer who wants to deepen your knowledge and understanding of the language and its core libraries. (Note that this book does assume a certain level of general programming experience). The writing style is clear, concise, and logical. The authors do a great job of illustrating each concept with relevant code snippets and examples. LINQPad, the freemium utility developed by the authors, is a very useful companion to the book (and is also quite impressive as a software achievement). For those who commented that the price of this edition is more expensive than previous editions, it's worth noting that this book clocks in at 1,035 pages. Hats off to the Albaharis for producing a phenomenal work of depth and breadth.

I was really enjoying this book, getting back up to speed on C# after 12 years, but every time I tried navigating with bookmarks or highlights my Kindle reader would freeze, then crash. Granted, my Kindle is a Fire, which is horrendously slow, but no other Kindle books I've read on it (MANY) have had any issues whatsoever. Amazon was kind enough to give me a refund (removing it from my library).==========Edit: So I purchased the print version for twice the price, I'm sure it will be worth it ;-)

Seems pretty comprehensive and writing is OK. Pretty much all you can ask for in a tech book.

Paddings between book center and text on pages are too small for such large book thickness,so it is almost not possible to open book enough widely for comfortable reading.

Indispensable reference for serious C# developers. Exhaustive, deep, with crystal-clear explanations.

This is probably my favorite reference, I read it cover to cover and it makes perfect sense, and the information is incredibly useful. I constantly find myself referencing this book, which makes it very well worth its asking price.

Amazing book, well structured and informative. Covers all aspects of the c# language. Very concise and straight to the point.

I am not a forensic artist, and I do not work in law enforcement, but I am a writer with an interest in various forensic science disciplines and the nexus between art & science. In particular, I am always interested in what makes someone "identifiable" -- how you *know* who someone is, how you recognize a person, what it means to identify or recognize someone & all the attendant cognitive issues. If you are at all interested in those kinds of questions, this book will knock your socks off and challenge you in ways you never imagined. It is also an incredible gift to witness Karen T. Taylor's methodical, exacting process step-by-step. Fifteen years ago, when I was writing an essay about a missing person case, I stumbled upon forensic facial reconstruction and thought, "This is what I am doing, too." Just as forensic artists sculpt from the architectural structure and anatomy of a skull, I was "sculpting" essays from the basic architecture of facts gleaned from research to bring this missing person to life. I had to be highly ethical and aware of where science/fact ended and creativity began. So when I found Karen T. Taylor's book, it became a sort of writing process bible for me, a way to imagine the nexus between science and art -- and it continues to apply to my work today, even if I am writing straight-up memoir. While teaching composition, I have even referenced this book to demonstrate to students how a methodical process works and why it unfolds in the order it does.In fact, ever since the first time I cracked open that spine, Karen T. Taylor has been a hero of mine. Not only does she know how to teach, but she is also extremely generous in sharing the secrets she has learned in her many years as a top forensic artist. She genuinely wants others to succeed in the field and help identify victims and criminals. There is absolutely no ego, which if you have spent much time in the arts, is a rare and amazing trait. The book gives you a solid foundation in the history of forensic art, the scientific basis for why forensic artists work as they do, facial anatomy, changes to the face after death, interviewing techniques for composite drawings, practical considerations such as tools and materials, and how to apply all of it to your work. Bonus: Karen T. Taylor happens to be a talented writer, too. The text is easy to read, even for non-forensic professionals, and it is loaded with illustrations.I have even purchased additional copies to give to friends in the visual arts, and they unanimously love it for how it has pushed them to greater understanding of faces. (I wasn't being generous. I simply can't bear to loan out my copy!)Finally, having taken her Forensic Facial Reconstruction-Sculpture course at the Forensic Anthropology Center at Texas State, I can assure you that Karen T. Taylor doesn't do anything halfway. She is not content to stick to techniques simply because she has always done them. She constantly strives to learn more about anatomy, more about tissue depth studies, and more about her art--a quality that shines through in this book as well, as she reveals how she learned from mistakes. During class, she was generous with her time and insight, and she is every bit as amazing as I had imagined, so if you love her book and feel like it has helped you hone your craft, take the workshop, too.

As a full-time instructor at the Art Institute of Phoenix, where I teach life drawing, character design, backgrounds design and similar classes, I often look for texts and information related to the subjects I teach. I picked up Forensic Art and Illustration recently, and have found it to be one of the best text purchases that I've ever made. Karen Taylor has accomplished in a single book what numerous authors have failed to do piecemeal over the past hundred years, and that is to assemble, in a single volume, in a highly readable and information-packed form, the best single description of the nature of forensic art available. Every kudo you read in these reviews is deserved. The book is well layed out, written in understandable English, with important information in bold type, a great device for reviewing salient points when going back to a chapter or two. The visuals are great, and deftly illustrate each point she is making. Her own reputation is of the highest order, and her talent and integrity stand out on every page. Having had the honor of meeting her and taking her forensic classes, I can attest that the book is a superb resource, both for the classes, and as a stand alone volume. You can't miss with this one. I highly recommend it, not just for those who think they will become forensic artists, but for all artists and laymen interested in the human form, anatomy and forensic information in general. The price, while moderately steep by general book standards, is average compared to most college textbook prices, and lower than many. Don't be put off by it. You will get every penny's worth.

This is the most comprehensive book in it's field and whether you are a professional in forensics or forensic art or are simply interested in the topic, Forensic Art and Illustration by Karen T. Taylor is a must read. Ms. Taylor gives a thorough and fascinating history of forensic art and helps the reader develop a meaningful understanding of forensic art's evolution and many uses. The author covers several types of forensic art including sculpture, composite, and postmortem. She includes case examples and clear instructions and often shows right and wrong examples of forensic art so that the reader can learn from successes as well as mistakes. If the reader is interested in becoming a forensic artist then this book is the foundation that is needed. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Karen T. Taylor is an amazing pioneer in the forensic world, both in composites and sculpting. I bought her book to take with me to her Forensic Facial Sculpting class. I just finished the course and am even more excited to see the items in Karen's book that weren't covered in class. Plus, this is such a great reference tool, with valuable resources, including diagrams, charts, sketching education and so much more. Knowing I can learn from such an acclaimed forensic artist, and then have her book to reference for just about everything! Such a treasure for my job as a forensic artist!!

Excellent book for the introduction to forensic art and illustration even for the layman. As an artist (but not a student) I found it fascinating.

Actually, the 4th book in the author's series of memoirs. A free spirit in captivity.

Great prose, heart wrenching story. Good read.

Perhaps what struck home for me was that, I'm a Kenyan and the history I know of my country is limited to heroic acts of victory and very little of what happened to those who dared speak against injustice then. Ngugi's recollections are filled with thoughts, memories and accounts of what he experienced behind bars for simply writing a play in his native tongue. He is hailed as a Literary Icon all over the world yet he had to flee my country because he couldn't give up writing. It saddens me. I grew up reading Ngugi's works and I'm amazed at his fascination and quick reference to the Old Testament in his works- and I came across the same here.In this book he makes a reference to an incident in History that's not taught or shared in our education system about the Nandi leader, Koitalel Arap Samoei, he states "Pit innocence against brutality and innocence will lose," and in a way, for me, that summarizes his account of time spent in Kamiti.I was quick to request to read this book off NetGalley because aside from his sharp writing, there's always a bit of history here and there that Ngugi's never afraid to share in his writing and that is powerful, especially to a Kenyan.

Wrestling with the Devil is such a necessary read. It’s in no shape or form an easy read though. You may actually want to put it down and forget about it, pretend you never picked it up. I admit that I wanted to a few times, mainly because I felt consumed by guilt. It’s not the first time that I feel guilty. I feel guilty a lot, guilty about a lot of things my ancestors have done to others, how as white colonial powers we created a world of hierarchy where we subjected others to discrimination, oppression, slavery, torture, famine, and often brutal death. It’s a necessary guilt, it teaches us to fight for change. While I was reading through Wrestling with the Devil one thought kept reoccurring in my mind... After WW2 the western world acted shocked about the absolute horrors of the Holocaust, never again we said, but at the same time we were just as brutal in the countries that we colonized! Even up until the 1960’s if not later. The hypocrisy of it all is lodged in my throat, it hasn’t gone unnoticed. (Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o actually does bring up the Hitler comparison about a quarter into his memoir, rightly so).Wrestling with the Devil was written in the early 80’s after Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o was in prison for a year, for the “crime” of having written a political play. Detained without trial, kept apart from other political prisoners for certain amounts of time, and away from general population all through-out his incarceration, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o wrote his now acclaimed novel, Devil on a the Cross, on toilet paper in his cell. Wrestling with the Devil recounts his time in prison, how he wrote the book, and how he managed to keep his sanity intact and continue to resist oppression. It’s also a brilliant overview of the oppression endured by the Kenyans during the brutal British rule, and how this oppression led to another kind of oppression once independence was finally gained.I also love how Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o describes the immense amount of art, culture, and resistance that was forged in the underground and right in front of the British oppressors - and I feel like I really haven’t done anywhere near enough work to learn more about Kenya, her history, and her culture. Something that I shall be rectifying this year!Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o weaves history, politics, social politics, and all kinds of personal anecdotes on life in general in Kenya into his narrative in Wrestling with the Devil, while providing a vivid image of life in prison as a political prisoner who has committed no other crime than that of helping to educate people. This book is an amazing insight into human resilience, how one is able to take a really bad situation (prison) and make it into a work of reflection (and art) in order to maintain ones sense of self, despite outside attempts to destroy ones essence and beliefs.I’m now adding more of Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o’s work to my must read list this year – his talent and brilliance have captured my heart and my mind.

I had only learned of Thiong'o's work through the book list 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die. I haven't read any of his fiction works but I was curious about this memoir being released so many years after its initial publication. Apparently it was edited to focus on Kenyan political history as a whole and less on the day-to-day injustices in the prison. The book is not structured in any linear fashion, but jumps around in time from the author's arrest to colonial times to recent political history. His sharp criticism for the colonial people has an edge to it; he complains that they have no culture of their own, in addition to abusing the Kenyans brutally. He has some amazing stories about the bizarre and disgusting things they did to Africans and to each other. He goes through Kenyan history. He details his arrest, which is a terrifying thing: spirited away in the night in an unmarked car, and put in a prison without anyone knowing he is there.I had not known anything about Kenyan history, and the story of Kenyatta is so frustrating and heartbreaking. He was an anti-colonial activist who was imprisoned for his political actions, then when he became the ruler of Kenya he was authoritarian and corrupt. He imprisoned Thiong'o for a play that addressed issues of class in society. The anti-oppression activist becomes the oppressor. Why? It's an issue that is topical these days with all of the "populists" gaining ground, "leaders" who talk about helping out the common people then turn around and oppress them. This book was a bit of a challenge to read because of how much it jumps around, but it is an important story that we should all hear. I look forward to reading Thiong'o's fiction. My thanks to Netgalley and The New Press for sending me an e-galley free of charge. My opinions are my own.
