Diving and Snorkeling Guide to Truk Lagoon (Lonely Planet Diving & Snorkeling Great Barrier Reef), by Tim Rock

Truk Lagoon, known as Chuuk – a group of tropical paradise islands in the Federal States of Micronesia – offers adrenaline-junky scuba divers a cool yet creepy underwater adventure in shark-infested Pacific waters while wreck diving the mysterious Ghost Fleet of Truk Lagoon. More than 50 major shipwrecks from WWII litter the seabed, making the undersea wonder of the world the best shipwreck diving destination on the globe. In 1944, Americans launched Operation Hailstone, which has been called the Japanese Pearl Harbor, and the bombardment lasted for three days. The attack wiped out 60 ships and 275 airplanes, sinking them to the bottom of the lagoon, so that now it is the biggest ship graveyard in the world. Most of the wrecks were left untouched for nearly 25 years since people feared setting off the thousands of sunken bombs. Many of the shipwrecks in the scuba diving paradise have full cargo holds full of fighter aircraft, tanks, bulldozers, railroad cars, motorcycles, torpedoes, mines, bombs, boxes of munitions, radios, thousands of various weapons, human remains, and other artifacts. More than 3,000 people were thought to have been killed and some divers swear that the wrecks in Truk Lagoon are haunted.

Nice general guide to the lagoon. There is so much detail to be covered that a book this size can't cover it all but this book does a nice job of covering the dives in broad strokes

It gives good general descriptions of dive sites on Truk and has been informative on diving and other subjects

Being first time horse owners, we were surprised to find out that one of our new broodmares was expecting a foal. Having been pasture bred, we had no expecting dates to go off of other than the ones given by the vet after performing an ultrasound. I had a lot to learn in a short period of time and this book was mentioned in a forum somewhere on my Internet travels. It was easy to follow and very detailed, almost too much regarding all of the possible situations in which a foal would need help being delivered. I was a bit paranoid for sure as there is really no way a vet can be there in time unless they live next door. Within a week of the expected delivery, the birthing pen was prepared, the monitoring system hooked up, and the foaling kit complete and organized. The only problem, my mare didn't read the book (I gave her a stern talking to). Even though I checked her twice a day for all the "signs," she wound up having the foal in the pasture. My husband fed the aggressively hungry mare at 8:30 am (losing appetite is one of the signs) and an hour later at 9:30 am (foals are typically born before dawn) saw a new colt standing next to her. Since my husband did not read the book (relied on me to provide the Cliff Notes), I was able to confidently walk him through all of the after foaling "must do's" until I got home from work. I gave four stars as I would like to see the book updated (printed in 1993) and include foaling after care like how much and what to feed the mare before weaning for good, quality milk production, when to expect the foal to begin eating solid food (mine began eating mama's hay by week two and I didn’t know if this was “normal”), and how to care for a youngster with foal diarrhea, as opposed to how to prevent it, (didn’t have an opportunity to clean the udder before nursing) as this was very nerve-wracking and scary. All-in-all, an absolute must-have reference guide.

As far as I'm concerned, this book is required reading for all foaling attendants. Thank you Dr. Karen Hayes for writing it. The book covers a single topic, and does it better than any of the other foaling guides I've read (and I've read quite a few). Those other foaling guides are on a bookshelf; this is the book that goes in the foaling kit! It has saved our farm from disaster on more than one occasion. Dr. Hayes clearly, calmly and concisely communicates the important facts and techniques the foaling attendant needs to know. The detailed diagrams make all the difference in illuminating exactly what is going on at each stage of parturition. Detailed descriptions of what's normal and what's not, techniques for resolving problems before they become critical, and advice on what to attempt yourself and when to call the vet are invaluable. You will find other fine books about breeding, mare care and foal care, but this is the best book on the actual process of protecting and caring for your mare when it's time to deliver her foal. Dr. Hayes' more general horse care [...].is also highly recommended.

I bought this book because I am a little rusty on my foaling ability (its been a few years) The book was very very thorough and had a lot of illustrations and pictures. Unfortunately in black and white however... Its a good book to get back in the swing of things although it is outdated. I have heard "Blessed are the broodmares" is a very very good book as well. That will be my next purchase! I like this book and would recommend it in conjuction with another book, Alone however as I said it is a bit dated and would need supplementation

I bought this book (along with quite a few others!) 2 years ago as I entered my third foaling season. In my opinion, this book is the only one you need. Even having attended a few foalings, I am always looking to further my knowledge. I wish I had bought the book before my very first foaling! The author does discuss a LOT of the things that can go wrong, but I would rather be well prepared for an emergency that might never happen, than to pretend like nothing can go wrong. It has really good info about the signs that foaling is approaching. I read this book going into the '09 season and have re-read it every season since to refresh myself. I have purchased 2 additional copies for fellow breeders as gifts and have recommended it to anyone I know who is new at attending foalings. I really can't say enough about how informative this book is!

The book delivers what you would expect from the title. If you decide to have a foal, then you must be prepared to handle any situation that could arise. I have read many books on this subject. This one covers every situation that could possibly go wrong. The picture illustrations show several foal dystocia positions. Exact instruction on how to correct each one is easy to understand. The foaling kit, a well as what to have with you when you enter the stall to check the position of the foal. There is a small window of opportunity here. If you miss this stage right after the water breaks, then do not check her.I see many foaling videos online and almost all are from people who have no clue what they are doing. I even saw a video where the attendant cut the umbilical cord with a knife. Being prepared gives you peace of mind. I thought I knew everything until I read this book. Now I understand how a simple correction, will allow the foal to pass through the birth canal with ease.

Great resource! I suggest you buy this ahead of time so that you can learn what is right (and what is wrong) before the birth is looking you in the face. Well-illustrated and clearly written, this book is a must-have for the expectant owner.

Read this book at a library and knew I needed a copy, what I wasn't expecting was to get a copy with not much of any wear across the book. Vary happy with this type of book.

From the Back Cover

""Thinking in Java" should be read cover to cover by every Java programmer, then kept close at hand for frequent reference. The exercises are challenging, and the chapter on Collections is superb! Not only did this book help me to pass the Sun Certified Java Programmer exam; it's also the first book I turn to whenever I have a Java question.""--Jim Pleger, Loudoun County (Virginia) Government"""Much" better than any other Java book I've seen. Make that 'by an order of magnitude'.... Very complete, with excellent right-to-the-point examples and intelligent, not dumbed-down, explanations.... In contrast to many other Java books I found it to be unusually mature, consistent, intellectually honest, well-written, and precise. IMHO, an ideal book for studying Java.""--Anatoly Vorobey, Technion University, Haifa, Israel""Absolutely one of the best programming tutorials I've seen for any language.""--Joakim Ziegler, FIX sysop""Thank you again for your awesome book. I was really floundering (being a non-C programmer), but your book has brought me up to speed as fast as I could read it. It's really cool to be able to understand the underlying principles and concepts from the start, rather than having to try to build that conceptual model through trial and error. Hopefully I will be able to attend your seminar in the not-too-distant future.""--Randall R. Hawley, automation technician, Eli Lilly & Co.""This is one of the best books I've read about a programming language.... The best book ever written on Java.""--Ravindra Pai, Oracle Corporation, SUNOS product line""Bruce, your book is wonderful! Your explanations are clear and direct. Through your fantastic book I have gained a tremendous amount of Java knowledge. The exercises are also "fantastic" and do an excellent job reinforcing the ideas explained throughout the chapters. I look forward to reading more books written by you. Thank you for the tremendous service that you are providing by writing such great books. My code will be much better after reading "Thinking in Java." I thank you and I'm sure any programmers who will have to maintain my code are also grateful to you.""--Yvonne Watkins, Java artisan, Discover Technologies, Inc.""Other books cover the "what" of Java (describing the syntax and the libraries) or the "how" of Java (practical programming examples). "Thinking in Java" is the only book I know that explains the "why" of Java: Why it was designed the way it was, why it works the way it does, why it sometimes doesn't work, why it's better than C++, why it's not. Although it also does a good job of teaching the what and how of the language, "Thinking in Java" is definitely the thinking person's choice in a Java book.""--Robert S. I just took a position as an iOS developer, however since we build off the Oracle Retail frameworks I needed a Java reference to keep nearby. This is by far worth every penny. Simple to understand, useful code examples, and fair use of the enormous Java library reachable through a simple import. Bruce's examples are clear and he makes intermediate topics easy to grasp. 6 stars.

[Review of 4th edition]This book has influenced my Java skills more than any other... Thinking In Java (4th Edition) by Bruce Eckel. It's the first one that actually made object-oriented programming understandable for me.Contents: Introduction; Introduction to Objects; Everything Is an Object; Operators; Controlling Execution; Initialization & Cleanup; Access Control; Reusing Classes; Polymorphism; Interfaces; Inner Classes; Holding Your Objects; Error Handling with Exceptions; Strings; Type Information; Generics; Arrays; Containers in Depth; I/O; Enumerated Types; Annotations; Concurrency; Graphical User Interfaces; Supplements; Resources; IndexI first got a copy of Thinking In Java back in 2000 when I was trying to wrap my mind around the language and object-oriented concepts. I was fortunate to read it before taking a Java class at the Sun headquarters. The person teaching object-oriented concepts was "less than stellar", but I was able to get my money's worth because I had been prepped with this book. Eckel has the rare ability to explain and structure his content in such a way that you feel like you're getting a personalized lesson. The diagrams and code samples work hand-in-hand to clarify each concept and to build your skill base step-by-step. Once you get done working your way through the 1400+ pages (yes, it's big!), there's not much you won't be able to do or understand in the world of Java.Thinking In Java is one of two books I recommend to anyone looking to get started in object-oriented Java coding. It will always hold a special place on my bookshelf, and I'll be forever in debt to Bruce Eckel for writing such an outstanding book.

I can't say enough good things about this book. I've been using it to quickly learn Java so as to program in Android. Obviously not everything I need is going to be in the book, but the concepts of Java that the author so clearly explains have been foundational.Having read dozens of programming books over the years, my take is that the majoriy are quickly put out and cover a lot of the same crud that every other book does, and in the same unfilling manner of them all. THIS BOOK however is totally fresh. My two books for the year are "Thinking in Java" and "Nerd Ranch Guide to Android Programming".

I've been coding Java for over a year, and have coded various other languages (never much C++, though). I find this book thorough, but I don't think it lives up to the word "Thinking". Also, I find the examples lack "obviousness".I expected more from a book with "Thinking" as the operative word in the title. I expected something that approached the language from a big-picture perspective. This may have been somewhat true in the earlier chapters, but is certainly not the case in chapters 8 (interfaces & inner classes) and 9 (holding your objects). Maybe it gets better after those chapters, but I couldn't read any more without writing this review. So how does the book undershoot the word "Thinking"? If one examined a map of a lake with a complicated shoreline (bays, inlets, coves, etc), a "Thinking" book on the topic would cover all of the "channels" (for land lovers, those are boat pathways), and why one channel would be better than the other during various conditions (wind from the east, use the channel close to the west shore). I found this book tedious in it's exploration of every foot of jagged lakeshore. I'm not asking for a smaller book, just one that moves some of the lesser important features into an appendix or something. The examples exercise the language very well. They show many, many features of the language. They are not very self explanatory. A huge flaw in the examples is the dependence on the author's utility classes. If the reader is trying to understand Java's hundreds of classes, there is no need to introduce more classes, even if it shrinks the code a bit. It might make the examples a bit more tidy, but it comes at a big price. Every line the reader encounters must be run through the 'can I use it' filter. After digesting hundreds of lines of examples, keeping this filter 'on' is tedious. Many of the utility classes can be avoided, for example, what's wrong with just filling an array manually? It's not as cool, but it's instantly obvious what's going on! Why use an example with 10 items when it would be more clear with 3? Why have System.out.println(a), when you could have System.out.println("after doing x, a=" + a);? And how about including output in the book? Yes, we have the code on the CD, and I could run the example, but when I'm reading, I'd rather have the output right there in print. If you think popping open a few classes in the Java standard library, and figuring out how they work is fun, you'll probably like to read this book. Personally, I have never found the need to examine the workings of the standard library. I am "the client programmer", so I use what they've done. In my real world, the best code is not the shortest. The best code is written to be understood as quickly as possible. I think a book that intends to teach Java strive for "obviousness". The examples in this book, though, do not excel in that area. The examples can be understood, and they show a lot of features, but the same concepts could be demonstrated with more clarity. As I said, getting rid of the author's utility classes (yes, they are really cool, yes they would be great improvements to the language, yadda, yadda), would be a great first step. I have re-written a few examples without the utility class, and find it much easier to see what's going on. Some might say I made examples "for dummies", but if there is nothing sacrificed in the way of concept, then why not?I'm going to finish this book (if it kills me), and I'll likely be a better programmer for it, but I just don't think it's the shortest path to Java nirvana.

One of the most important things about learning Java, is understanding and using ObjectOriented Programming(OOP). The syntax of java is much like C but the emphasis on the use of OOP helps to make the paradigm shift that is necessary for really learning java. This was the text in an evening college level course that was Not for Computer Scientists. We tried other books but the class preferred this book. When admin, wanted to change to another, we persuaded them to continue to use this book. I eventually passed the Sun JavaCertified Programmer exam. I used many other books as well, but I find I keep coming back to it.I used the first edition, and there are some portions that were a bit challenging, but that wasn't because of the quality of the writing. This author prides himself on "educating" rather than than just pumping out a book. He has years of experience as a teacher and knows the places where students will have difficulty. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn java.
