About the Author

In addition to The Book of Delights: Essays, Ross Gay is the author of three books of poetry, including Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude, winner of the 2015 National Book Critics Circle Award and the 2016 Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award. Catalog was also a finalist for the 2015 National Book Award in Poetry, the Ohioana Book Award, the Balcones Poetry Prize, the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award, and was nominated for an NAACP Image Award. He is a founding editor, with Karissa Chen and Patrick Rosal, of the online sports magazine Some Call It Ballin’ and founding board member of the Bloomington Community Orchard, a nonprofit, free-fruit-for-all food justice and joy project. Gay has received fellowships from the Cave Canem Foundation, the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, and the Guggenheim Foundation. He teaches at Indiana University.

Ross Gay effortlessly flits between whimsy and reflection, humor and gravity. I highly recommend this book, and if you ever have a chance to see a reading in person, go for it! His authenticity and pathos resonate through his person and his printed words, and he is truly a delight!

The whole premise has brightened my days!!

I heard this guy on NPR reading a few passages from his book. A true driveway moment as I couldn’t get out of the car until the interview was done. I immediately went to Amazon and ordered the book!!!

Like a previous reviewer, I heard Ross Gay interviewed on NPR and then had to go out and buy the audiobook (also narrated by Ross Gay). It is amazing! He brings beauty and humor to everyday things, from where one would expect to find them, like the garden, to more fraught issues like racism, murder, and terminal illness.

LOVE THIS SERIES! We own almost all of these now and each one is as great as the one before! We use them in our homeschool and I enjoy them as much as the kids do! Very well written.

Bringing history to life by presenting it like a novel, Monks and Mystics is one of the most entertaining history books you or your child will ever read. It is the second in the "History Lives" series by Mindy and Brandon Withrow and covers the "Chronicles of the Medieval Church."The majority of chapters present part of the story behind an important figure in the early church, written with the action, dialogue, and description of a good novel. Interspersed between these chapters are a few short, strictly nonfiction chapters, explaining such things as how the pope came to be, how Islam affected Christian history, and the councils of the Medieval church.The novelized chapters cover Gregory the Great, Boniface, Charlemagne, Constantine and Methodius, Vladmir, Anselm of Canterbury, Bernard of Clairvaux, Francis of Assisi, Thomas Aquinas, Catherine of Sienna, John Wyclif, and John Haus.Although a book covering Christianity during this time period must focus on the Catholic church (because there was no other church), the authors stress: "Modern Protestants disagree with quite a few medieval ideas, but that does not mean that the men and women of the Middle Ages were always wrong or that they did not love God's Word. In fact, despite their differences, later Protestants admired many medieval thinkers...Like Christians of all eras, they made both positive and negative contributions to the church."Although Medieval Christians are perhaps best known for the Crusades, they also translated the Bible into several languages for the first time, including English. Constantine and Methodius even created a written Slavic language so they could give the Slavs a Bible. Like Christians of all eras, they also strove to help the needy, teach the gospel, keep the church pure, and deal with the politics surrounding them.What I Like: The concept behind these books is excellent. Very few of us don't enjoy reading a novel more than a dry history book. Monks and Mystics gives us the best of both worlds by giving us historic fact combined with good story telling.What I Dislike: My only gripe with this book is its treatment of the Crusades. Unfortunately, many people have forgotten the fact that Muslim armies invaded Europe, hoping to make them Islamic lands, and Monks and Mystics doesn't seek to remind anyone of this. It almost seems as though the Withrows wish to make the Crusades apolitical and non-religious. This is not to say Europeans were without fault during the many Crusades, or that some endorsed the Crusades for political reasons or personal gain. However, there were understandable reasons for Europeans to fight many of the Crusades, also. This book, and its companion, Peril and Peace, is a well-written collection of narratives about important Christians. The stories are descriptive and interesting, and give you a real sense of "being there". I never studied church history as a child, and I enjoy reading these stories aloud to my 10yo son as we study history. I highly recommend this book to other homeschoolers, parents who want to help their kids learn about church history, and even adults who want an enjoyable introduction to the lives of important Christians of the past. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series!

This review applies to the Audible unabridged edition. Robin Bailey reads this story with a hint of villianous egotism inside a sense of humor. As for AG's detection club claiming she didn't play fair with who she designated as the murderer, this is addressed in the film, "Murder by Death" by Neil Simon. In fact, she did play fair by allowing the reader (listener) to have almost every clue. Murder on the Orient Express is my favorite Christie film, but this audio version is my favorite.

Even if you're not really an Agatha Christie fan, you should read this one. Christie is criticized as a literary light-weight. It's true that her characters are formulaic, but she wasn't really interested in characters. Her specialty was intricate, multi-layered puzzles and no one did them better. This book and AND THEN THERE WERE NONE are her trickiest and she spoke of both as her most difficult to "pull off" effectively.I can't say much about the plot without giving away the secret, but it's easy to see why this book caused such a stir and why it continues to be so controversial among fans of classic British mysteries. Some of Christie's colleagues at the Detection Club accused her of cheating, but she stoutly maintained that all the clues were there. I think she's right and the book is even more fun to read the second time to see what you missed on the first reading.In addition to the tricky plot, the book is of historical interest in other ways. It introduces a character that Christie DID care about. The narrator, Dr. Sheppard, has a nosy, bossy older sister who plays a pivotal role in the story. The author claimed that Carolyn Sheppard was based on her own grandmother and great-aunt, both important figures in her childhood. They were women who appeared to be sheltered and ignorant and yet they were shrewd judges of character and (through gossip and their servants) they knew everything that was going on around them. A few years later, this character would emerge as Miss Jane Marple and the books and stories that feature her are my favorites.This book also appeared at a pivotal point in Christie's life. Her first book (THE MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR AT STYLES) was published almost by accident and led to the novice author signing a publishing contract which netted her very little money. She lived up to her obligations, but switched publishers as quickly as possible and made damned sure to be well-represented in the negotiations with her new publishing house. Mrs. Christie may have been shy and unassuming, but she knew her own worth and she wanted to profit from her successful books. "Money, it means much to me and always has done" says Hercule Poirot and the character speaks from the author's heart.This was her first book with her new publisher and (partly because it was more effectively marketed than her earlier ones) was her most successful to that date. It was also the last book she wrote before her beloved mother died, her first marriage fell apart, and she became a public figure in a most unpleasant way. She would never again be the confident, trusting young woman who wrote this book, but she learned from her mistakes and (eventually) went on to even greater success and personal happiness. Good for her.

THIS REVIEW IS SPECIFIC TO THIS VERSION. The book I received was not the book that I thought it would be. First, the cover itself looks like it was made on a personal computer, the picture is stretched so its blurry, the main character has a hole in his head which you can tell is not suppose to be there and the authors name which is originally printed at the top is cut off. Perhaps the worst part is the back cover switches between telling two different plot lines, like wtf? The inside is printed like a school book with the print being extra large and all spaced out. I don't wanna read it because I'm picky about my books and I wouldn't be surprised if there were errors throughout the whole book. What a disappointment!!

The release of a new film based on Agathe Christie's much lauded mystery was what drove me to read the novel. I recommend the book without reservation. This paperback edition has nice sized type and spacious line spacing. It is also the previously mass-marketed version; on bookshelves now is the current reprint with the cast of the Branagh film on the cover. The story is a quick yet engrossing read. Spoil alert: do yourself a favor and read the novel before seeing any of the filmed versions. Knowing what happens from seeing the film quite diminishes the fun of figuring out the who-done-it along with Poirot. N.B. Of the three films based on Christie's novel (the most recent directed by and starring Kenneth Branagh; the 1974 version starring Albert Finney; and a made for TV production from 2001 with Alfred Molina as Poirot [which I have not seen]), I think the award goes to the Finney. Both Branagh and Finney's films are very good, but Branagh makes some small changes that really didn't make any sense. Besides being more faithful to the book, Finney's performance of the revelation of the murder is more powerful. Still, the greatest pleasure is reading the book.

This is the worst publication I have ever seen. The book looks like a bootleg type copy. There is no copyright in the book. The text is broken in really odd places. I am surprised Amazon would even sell this.

Agatha Christie at her best! I am an avid Marple & Poirot fan, but I had never gotten around to reading this particular Christie novel. There's a lot of hype around this novel and some say its the best, and I can't find a reason to argue that. Reads very nicely and the ending had me pop up out of bed. I think I paced around my bedroom reading the last few pages.If you like Christie or are a fan of mystery, you must get this book. I especially like this particular publisher because of the good quality, attention to detail in editing, and that they organize the stories by Poirot, Marple, etc. in the top left corner.

Pat Chamberlin-Calamar has taught everything from music and English in Denmark to folk guitar and parent-toddler classes. love this book....nice pictures to have kids find the next animals...sing it to the tune of twelve days of christmas and you have a hit!

There are tons of cheesy Alaskan books out there, but this one is well done. We give this one as a gift often, as we live in Alaksa and the kids of friends and family are often curious about Alaska. This story goes with the 12 days of Christmas song.... Be warned that the song is catchy and fun, the kids just might not stop singing it!

What a fun book! Time constraints or younger children? Quickly read the book (challenge you to TRY to not sing it. It's so catchy you just have to).Older readers can read the facts about Alaska printed on the pages under the song lyrics.Greatly illustrated.

This Alaskan born loves this book. Want my kids to have a sense of Alaska, this book was another great intro to the wildlife there. The illustrations are very cute. Every page has all the previous animals included, making it a fun little game to find all the animals...REALL wish there was a "12 Days..." for every season...

Wonderful book! Very beautiful & colorful illustrations and very fun to sing along. Great for practicing counting as well as learning about animals and nature. My 3 yr old loves to sing along and hunt for the animals on each page, and older kids would like the fun facts. So cute and fun, even if you are not from Alaska. Highly recommend!

I was given this book, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. Once I got it, I discovered it is also a "Kindle Unlimited" book, I could have sampled it before I got it. I'm starting out with butternut squash soup and meatballs. Both are easy to make. I cook for one, so the extras go into the freezer for another meal. While not every recipe has a photo, most of them do, and they are gorgeous.The variety of recipes is outstanding. There aren't a thousand recipes, but in the back of the book there are menu plans for 1000 days (which matches the title of the book. Cruising through the cookbook makes me hungry. Many of the recipes are gluten free (I'm cutting carbs to loose weight) which helps the way I'm living now. For example, no bread crumbs in the Marinara Beef Meatballs.These recipes are not the same recipes borrowed from other recipe books and pinterest pages. They are different and original. I'm looking forward to cooking them. I've printed a couple of them to take to the grocery store. I'll update my review with the (sure to be delicious) results.Helpful hint for people with the Kindle version on a computer - pull up the recipe, hit "PrtSc" (print screen) which takes a snapshot of your screen, paste it into your paint program. Crop it. Print it. Now it is ready to go to the grocery store or pasted on the refrigerator (which is where I put recipes while I'm cooking.

Of all the cookbooks I rushed out to get when I first got my IP, this is the best. Katie uses easy to find ingredients and easy to follow recipes. A lot of the books I have feature recipes that are too adventurous for these Senior Citizens, with a bunch of ingredients I’d have to buy especially for the meal and then never use again. Boo. Hiss.I can’t wait to work my way through more of these recipies! Thank you, Katie, for sending me this e-book!

I was prepared to give this book 2 or 3 stars because I thought it had been written by an amateur. After finding out that the author is a professional recipe writer and photographer I do stand by my 1 star review.1) The photos are all in black and white and of poor quality which makes the food quite unattractive. There is a mention at the end of the book that the PDF colors can be obtained for free online. That is generally not what I would want from a paper version of a cookbook. It is different, if, for example, the photos are originally taken as black-and-white photos or one is just shown drawings. These photos are just unattractive and unclear.2) In addition the photos do not always show the recipe as it is published in the book. For example on the black bean and chili steamed tilapia recipe on page 122 does not mention using aluminum foil while the photo for the recipe on page 123 displays the fish inside and aluminum foil pocket.3) The page setup in terms of font is shrunk to fit one page no matter how long the recipes. You may need to put your glasses on and off several times trying to make a recipe.4) There are typos.5) Some inconsistencies in description are again highly unprofessional so for example sometimes the altar mentions using high pressure was sometimes the author refers to cooking on manual without telling us if this is under pressure and what level of pressure. Sometimes the olive oil recommended is extra-virgin and sometimes in it is not without any apparent reason (I am aware that there are circumstances where one would prefer to use one or the other)The recipes worry me, here are a few of the reasons:6) The author recommends cooking canned asparagus for 10 minutes under high pressure in her recipe for creamy corn and asparagus chicken soup. I do not exactly understand why one would need to cook canned asparagus which is already cooked. Cooking them for 10 minutes under high pressure will turn it into a rather unpalatable and soggy mess.There is a consistent overuse of olive oil and coconut milk, including in the same recipe (steamed banana and coconut tuna with fruit punch)There is an appalling reliance on the use of liquid smokeI am happy if this book has helped some people cook. As an experienced cook this book gives me indigestion as well as sore eyes.

I got this ebook for free in exchange for an honest review. I like the variety of recipes presented, with many Asian dishes included. The metric measurements threw me off at first, but she does provide a ounce equivalent. My ebook has color photos and seems to be well laid-out, though the order of the chapters is a little funny, with dessert presented before the meats. That's my preference in food, anyway, so no matter! Thanks, Katie!

I really like the variety in this cookbook. The recipes are grouped by type which is very helpful. They look great for every day cooking using what you would normally have on hand--which is a huge plus. The author gives cooking tips with each recipe. Recipes are easy to follow.The layout of the book is good but could be improved. While the recipes are grouped, the order is odd and seems thrown together--Lamb then Soups then Desserts then Beef. There is also a section for Soups and one for Soups & Stews. Seems like these should be combined.The book also includes meal schedules which layout 1 recipe to make each day. There are many months of schedules available. This is nice touch but in looking through these each month or even week could use more variety. Scanning through each month concentrates on one type of meat instead of incorporating various meats throughout the month schedule. I will still likely use these for ideas but will vary meats from day to day.I received a digital copy free in exchange for my honest review.

The recipes are well written, clear, and easy to follow - and delicious. I'm anxious to try more of them.The wording of the title of the book is misleading. It took me several times reading the title to realize that the author means 1000 "Meal" Plans not actually 1000 "Recipes". I will never use those Plans. The organization of the recipes is odd, but the index makes it easy to find what you are looking for.I will refer back to this book often.
