I wanted to buy one book that would be good for my china vacation. After much research I felt this book would do the trick. And I was correct. A great book. Lots of information. Wonderful pictures and laid out well. I liked that I could research and also learn more about the sites that I saw. Also, there were maps and recommendations. Highly recommend this book for the traveler and DK books in general have a great reputation.

I used the DK series on Europe when we took a 23 day tour of Europe. I read/reviewed the books before we went on the tours and they helped a lot so I didn't have a steep learning curve. This book in China doesn't disappoint. History, culture, sights, customs, people, ----all explained with fantastic photos and diagrams to help you visually perceive China. Money well spent if you are planning a trip to China. I, personally have been traveling to China over the last 12 years on an annual basis, spending about 4 to 6 months on each trip. I continue to find new places, new friends, new things to do. Most of you planning a trip to China will probably only do it once in a lifetime. Save yourself some grief, get this book so you can prioritize your time for an enjoyable journey to a beautiful country with friendly people and a colorful past. Make this your first China book!!!!!

Trying to review this book is somewhat hard, technically it's a travel guide and as that its ok, but its really more than that. Its one of the best birds eye views of the major attractions in China. Kind of a Whats-What of China. Having been to China on several trips I can personally attest to the quality of the selection and information.They Layout is organized by region, usually two provinces to a Chapter. You get a brief overview of the province, then it moves to 1-2 pages per location (maybe a city or a park) in that province. The information is a smorgasborg of text, photos and illustrations. It covers the major attractions and why they are significant. The photographs are stunning (if small by necessity). The information is both informative and concise. Its amazing how much stuff they've packed in there.Sprinkled throughout the chapters are various shorts (1-2 pages) on Chinese history and culture. Again high level concise information but enough to get you started.The construction of the book is way above your newsprint guides. Its got good binding, vinyl covers and slick glossy pages. Top notch.The only thing I would knock it for is that as a travel guide its travel nuts and bolts (specific places to stay, eat, shop, train schedules, directions etc) is pretty weak. They have some information but it tends to be focused more on the high end stuff rather than the budget backpacker.This book is best bought, used and enjoyed as a overall reference book on China for people who just want to know more. As a travel guide it is a good source of information to get you started, but its not where you'll finish. My husband and I travelled independently around China for 3 weeks with this book and the Lonely Planet. We found that the beautiful photography helped inspire our choice of destinations, and the maps and illustrations helped us navigate once we were there. We especially liked the axonometric drawings with labels.Although this book includes some practical information about the sites, the Lonely Planet was much more detailed in terms of how to actually get somewhere. I think it would be difficult to travel with only this book for guidance.A few hotels and restaurants are recommended in the back of the book. This information would have been much more useful if the names were also written in Chinese. We often found ourselves in situations where we could not communicate with taxi drivers or hotel concierges, so we relied on pointing to places (with Chinese names) in guidebooks. Having the pinyin names didn't do us much good since our pronunciation and accents were not understandable.

Very informative and beautifully illustrated. The maps could have been a little clearer, and you don't want to log this heavy book on your trip, but it really helps prepare for that trip to China.

The eyewitness travel series is the book of choice for any travel. And the China version doesn't miss.I traveled to China for vacation 2.5 years ago when I didn't have the Eyewitness guide. I got a good sense of my travels a the time by reading multiple books and asking my guide many questions.However in my trip this year...I had the Eyewitness guide. It not only strengthened my understanding of the many places, events, and culture which I experienced 2.5 years ago...it prepared me to open my eyes to a whole new world when I traveled in 2007.What sets DK apart is that it gives you not only practical information...But provide maps/pictures/illustrations which other's cannot present. And this is all that much important for the Western traveler where China is still in the process of fine tuning tourism and how sights are communicated to visitors.I recommend Eyewitness guides not only for any vacation...but especially for travels to China.

Lent hasn't even begun yet and I've already had to purchase this book three times because I keep giving my copies away! I've loved each of the first two books in this "Literary Guide" series by Sarah Arthur, and this one does not disappoint. If you are looking for a thoughtful, interesting way to read yourself through the seasons of Lent and Easter, this is the book for you!

I am enjoying this book for my Lenten reading. Well structured and interesting readings. It is one book in what are books of the church calendar. I plan to order the others to enrich my devotional times.

A bit disappointed in the literary choices. Many contemporary poets, etc. Perhaps her previous 2 Guides were more traditional and familiar and a reader should do those first. I was not aware of them and purchased this to use during Lent. Sometimes I cannot see why the selections were picked as they don't seem to connect to the scriptures.

Couldn't connect with her selections. Really wanted to especially since Ann Voskamp gave it a positive review. I'm not poetic enough, perhaps? Did love her Bible readings though, hence the 2 stars.

What a pleasure it is to read a novel by someone who really knows how to write, and who moreover is expert at mixing the ingredients of a good story: an appealing protagonist, a dramatic background (World War I in this case), a setting guaranteed to push my own personal hot buttons (English countryside, herb gardens, mystery, danger), and an ending that made me want to stand up and cheer. I devoured this book—received it Monday afternoon and finished it 24 hours later. This novel gets my own personal accolade, that of A Rattling Good Read.

Rhys Bowen has written a lovely standalone piece of historical fiction set during the last months of World War I. I spent a wonderful afternoon immersed in her story and living with her characters. My favorite wasn't Emily, as might be expected, but the octogenarian Lady Charlton, who is a mass of contradictions and more than capable of surprising all those around her. However, there are enough characters in the book for readers to each have their favorite.Over many years of reading, I have found that I don't care much for static characters and complete predictability in my series fiction, but I don't mind it at all when I read a standalone novel. There's really nothing new under the sun in The Victory Garden. I knew what was going to happen before it did, and there was only one bit of shocking news. But I didn't care. It is very enjoyable to read a story in which good things eventually happen to good people who have faced great adversity. Sometimes your heart needs to be fed more than your mind, and The Victory Garden is a satisfying main course.

Having read several of the Royal Spyness Mysteries, and loved them, I was looking forward to reading The Victory Garden. For one thing, I was interested in the setting and time period, But after reading the first six chapters of this book I have to be blunt and say I'm not even sure I can finish it, Not only is it difficult to get into, but the writing feels like a less experienced writer has written it, which Rhys Bowen is anything but. I couldn't bond with Emily, thought the Australian boyfriend was less than well-drawn and the mother was very cliché. Overall, a big disappointment.

The description on the back of this book was on point, nothing else to this story. So, I am going to review my likes and dislikes.This follows the fictional life of the main character Emily during WWI. The story does include her life among the Women's Land Army, albeit not into much detail. Since the book covers the very end of the war, the land girls and Emily's life there were only given about one fourth time of this novel. I was disappointed. Next, the story tries to then focus on the main character using natural herbal remedies as the next chapter in her life, but this aspect just seemed tacked on. Emily's herbal remedy potions had little to do with what she learned being a land girl. It was like the story needed somewhere to go. I kept reading waiting for everything to piece together, but it was weakly done.Something I found interesting and was hopeful about was the pregnancy of the main character. Refusing to go to a home where she can have the child placed for adoption, she was determined to have the child on her own and make ends meet. She has the child out of wedlock during a time period where this was unacceptable, so this is what kept me reading. Yet, I found her unrelenting ability to always prevail and meet her challenges successfully during the pregnancy far-fetched and romantical rather than historical.Not as impressive as The Tuscan Child, which I was a huge fan of. I didn't feel like I was immersed into another society or culture. BUT a quick and very easy read. I would say 2.5 stars. Although some things were very predictable, it was entertaining at times.

While much has been made of the battlefield and diplomatic maneuvering during the Great War on its centennial, not much has been written recently about the home front experience.Now that has been remedied by Rhys Bowen’s 2019 “The Victory Garden”, an entertaining novel about the experiences of a few British women who find themselves unexpectedly thrown together in Devon and Cornwall supporting the war effort during its last year.The tale is related through the perspective of a determined young woman, Emily Bryce, who comes from a comfortable home in Torquay with parents aspiring to upper middle class and keeping close rein on their daughter, particularly after losing a son during the war. However, Miss Emily has different ideas, no doubt “headstrong” in the eyes of her parent, about her future.Her twenty-first birthday becomes unexpectedly the occasion for her first flight – leaving home, meeting an injured Australian pilot, Robert Kerr, and entering the Women’s Land Army to do something to support the troops by way of helping local farms without manpower.Events move swiftly as Emily makes friends with a variety of women from different walks of life, learns sadly the love of her life has been killed after returning to the war, and she is pregnant.. After attempting to return home but intimidated by her parents, she strikes out again with support from her new women friends.Eventually, Emily is living in a small cottage on a larger estate owned by a grumpy older woman, Lady Charlton, who comes to appreciate and admire the young woman’s grit. As they spend time together, Lady Charlton’s housekeeper, Mrs. Trelawney, is jealous and suspicious - a sort of Mrs. Danvers, the housekeeper in Daphne DuMaurier’s “Rebecca.”It is here that Emily restores an herb garden based on old diaries and notes. Before long the locals see her as the return of “the wise woman” who used to care for the garden. As you might expect from the novel’s title, the garden becomes symbolic of Emily’s ambitions, skillfulness and tenderness for her community – not without drama before the novel’s end.Bowen weaves not only the mindset of women at home during World War I but also the sudden impact of the Spanish influenza pandemic during 1918 – 1919. It is estimated 228,000 British people died during this outbreak. Interesting though, she does not mention the 1918 Parliamentary Qualification of Women Act giving many women the right to vote –in large part propelled by women’s contributions during the Great War.Many will find comfort in Bowen’s talent for describing cozy meals, camaraderie and small details in home and garden. However, as I have found with her other books, its pleasant resolve seems a little too much and more in the style of 1930s and 1940s film endings.That said, I am sure many will be refreshed by this herbal bouquet.

As much as I dislike giving a book three stars, this one deserves it. It isn't a bad book. It just needs several things. First for an editor to go over the story with the author to flesh it out better and slow the pace down. Second it really needs to be spell checked and edited in general. I feel like the author was improving as she continued to write this story. It is a fun quick mystery and for 99 cents that's not a bad buy. I do hope others will give this story a chance and that the author will continue to write.

I really enjoyed this first in a series. Strong characters that are likable, and a strong sense of community.Tabby is saving to open her shop, when a dead body is found and the town elder disappears, whom Tabby considers a good friend. I liked the different way things happened, Tabby's love life, how she is saving for her shop, love the sheriff who is doing his job and is also likable, a nice change from so many cozies. The new possible love interest and her mother are strong backups and Gladys Twittle aka the town mouth is hysterical and is not over used to the point of obnoxious, I love the mix of characters.The mystery was interesting with a little twist. There are some editing errors but don't let that stop you from this enjoyable read, the characters and strong sense of community are worth bypassing those errors. I will continue on with this series.

My grandmother, mother, and I have all canned many things in various size jars. So, my first question was where did Tabby store over two thousand jars for the jelly??? My second question where was Mr. Wells, and then why did he disappear, and then … I guess I had a lot of questions as I read this book. Other than the storage of the jelly jars, they were all answered in a most enjoyable read. BTW: Busy bodies get what they deserve!!!

Donna Walo Clancy nails small town life. From the town gossip to the quaint shops along Main Street, I felt like I'd traveled back home. The book is a sweet little mystery - love story and is a clean and quick read. The book could be improved through editing, but the mistakes were not enough to be cumbersome along the way. I look forward to more books in the series, as these characters definitely grow on you.

What a wonderful mystery , I enjoyed it so much ! Lots of stuff happening!! I recommend it to anyone who loves cozy mysteries and recipes !! I hope to see more from Donna Wall Clancy !!!!

For Tabby thinks are going to change as a dead body, an ex-boyfriend and trying toopen a gift shop are going to get all twisted up in mystery and suspense,Fun story for a lazy afternoon read.

Wow, loved this book, loved the characters, kept me guessing until the very end. Really enjoyed this book, can't wait for the next book to come out. Highly recommend

I have many cast-iron pans, there is definitely a different way of cooking with them, and this book covers these aspects, with lovely recipes and photos it was a joy to read. The recipes are extremely easy to follow, instructions and explanations are good and the meals are delicious and different. This book was provided to me in return for a honest and unbiased review.

I bought a cast-iron skillet years ago, but I have barely used it. I've never been sure just what to do with it. I mean, you can't cook without non-stick coating, right? So I was eager to learn from this book how to use my cast-iron skillet; how to care for it.This cookbook is slightly different from most cookbooks, as there isn’t an extensive introduction. Usually a cookbook has fairly detailed intro that gives a glimpse into the thought that went into the cookbook, history, cooking equipment, cooking techniques, etc. This book does that, but in much briefer style, and after a dozen pages you are diving into the recipes. I liked this! They got to the point, told you what you needed to know, and moved on to the meat of it!You learn about the different types of cast-iron. Not only the traditional skillet, but also griddles and pots and specialty pans. You learn how to best "season" the pan (so you have no need for that non-stick coating I mentioned earlier), and a "seasoned" pan vs. enameled cast iron, and what not to do with cast iron.It's broken into chapters for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, Sides and Snacks, and Dessert. All recipes are cooked in a cast-iron pan, whether on the stovetop, in the oven, or over an outdoor fire. Classic recipes like Fried Chicken or Steaks with Red Wine Sauce, something a little more unexpected like Baked Crab & Shrimp or Charred Eggplant Dip, or a dessert of Cranberry Upside-Down Cake.Each recipe is showcased with a full page picture and the recipe title boldly stretched across it. Bright and colorful and yummy photography, simple and easy-to-read ingredient list, and numbered recipe steps.I decided to make the Korean Short Ribs (galbi). The recipe called for "flanken-cut beef short ribs", and I had no clue what "flanken-cut" was. It would have been nice if it had explained this. Regardless I just used what I had on hand.The ribs were marinated for 24 hours in a soy sauce/rice marinade with scallions, pears, onion, garlic and ginger. Then they were cooked in a hot cast iron skillet.Yum!The trouble is that my skillet is now coated in cooked-on marinade, and it does not want to come clean. Which leads me to my only real complaint: This book didn't give me explicit instructions for how to clean off cooked-on food and grime, nor what type of scrubbing pads I could use (rather than what I can't use).But that's really my only complaint. The book is concise at under 100 pages, beautifully done, with tantalizing recipes. It's informative and inspirational, and I love it!

Every recipe is a hit! Love the pizza recipe so much we can no longer order pizza out as our homemade is so wonderful. And its fun to make.

Great recipes that one might actually make! We tried the North African lamb chops which were delicious...it might be my new favorite meal. The dishes in the book all look delicious and seem achievable. I can't wait to try some other recipes.

I really love Storey Publishing and review for them frequently. It is because of the quality of their books and Ms. Narin's Cast-Iron Cooking is a prime example of this.While the traditional care of a cast iron skillet is included, it is the recipes that really make this book stand out. Interesting, unique breakfast to desserts recipes go beyond what is seen in other cast iron skillet recipe books I have reviewed. Recipes are simple and laid out well with photos to accompany most if not all. Ms. Narins even included some vegetarian recipes. However, they are very limited.This book is definitely worth the purchase price, especially for the ebook version.
