Quin has an appealing writing style and writes on issues of great import. They say you should write what you know, and write real characters. Quin does both.Any disappointment with the book is more related to how it is billed then the book itself. There are a few chapters here and there that relate less to the events of the kidnapping, and simply more to the events of Quin's life, that could perhaps be edited for a more streamlined work. In a 22 chapter book, it gives nothing away to say that in the 4th chapter she is freed- this book has less to do with being kidnapped, or escaping, than the after-effects of a kidnapping on the life of a woman and geopolitical events.And for that it is an incredible resource. Though this is an engaging read, it is also nonfiction, and thus provides a great deal of relevent information on life in Yemen and the situation in an Islamist kidnapping (as opposed to a tribal kidnapping). As I contemplate possibly moving to this country, Quin gives solid warnings on possible dangers to be faced there. Additionally, there are a wealth of insights on how an individual deals with the stress of a kidnapping; how it can change their lives and bring to light new possibliies that would never have existed otherwise. Quin is not only a great writer but also an excellent researcher. I was continually amazed at her ability to uncover truth, connect seemingly disparate circumstances, and gain information form interviewees by putting them at ease and yet asking the hard questions. If you are interested in the effects of kidnapping, the situation in Yemen, or the events of the modern terrorist world, then this is an requisite book.

This book was special for me because a friend of mine was among the group kidnapped. However, the book is amazing because of what followed the kidnapping and how the author kept with her quest to find out why it had happened and who the kidnappers were. She was extraordinarily successful, which makes for riveting reading and insight into the minds of the men she hunted.

AN UPDATE to Mary Quin's (no relation) powerful story: Abu Hamza al-Masri, the London-based imam, was subsequently tried and convicted in UK courts for terrorist activity, and served a few years time (I believe the offenses were more locally-based there rather than involving Ms. Quin). Subsequently, as reported last night (Sunday, Oct. 2, 2016) on CBS' "60 Minutes" with an interview of Mary Quin, based in large measure on her post-kidnap investigations and information obtained, Abu Hamza al-Masri was extradited to the US and tried and convicted in SDNY federal court in New York and, in Jan. 2015, sentenced to life in federal prison for, inter alia, his activities in the planning and encouraging of the kidnapping of the tourists in Yemen, including Mary Quin. He resides in the Supermax prison in Florence, Colorado. Huzzah for Mary Quin!

About this book, Daniel Pipes wrote: In her mid-40s, a successful executive just placed in charge of Xerox's Color Solutions Business Unit, Quin had a taste for exotic travel that took her in late 1998 to Yemen with a group of eighteen other Western tourists. She and they had the misfortune to have their Land Cruisers driven directly into a war between the government and an Islamist outfit called the Aden Abyan Islamic Army (AAIA). The entire tourist group was taken hostage on December 28 and held for more than a day before Yemeni military forces attacked the AAIA, leading to the deaths of four tourists, two terrorists, and one soldier. Quin herself had a close brush with death, but the terrorist holding the gun in her back was hit before he could do damage to her; in an act of daring-do, she managed to pull from his still-live hands his AK-47, an act which left her a changed person. (The mild-mannered, liberal feminist admits that as she exultantly fought for the gun, she had a revelation: "So this is why men like war.")The story of the capture takes up but the first quarter of Kidnapped in Yemen; the remainder consists of Quin's personal account, mixed with her sleuthing to figure out what had happened to her and her companions. Through assiduous press research plus personal investigations that took her to London's Finsbury Park mosque (to meet the notorious Abu Hamza) as well as a journey back to Yemen and the scene of the crime, she comes up with a coherent account of the tensions that culminated in her seizure. I have never finished a book and just wanted to call the author and say: "Hi, I loved your book, it spoke to me on so many levels, and I want you to know how much I appreciate you writing it."I'm sure there were many painful moments in the research, which took the author back to that life threatening event. She touched deeply on so many topics that are near to my heart: New Zealand~a country I love, Alaska~my home for the past twenty-five years, Hunting~putting words to the incredible experience of a hunt, Relationship~finding someone to love amid the mêlée, and last but certainly not least, the experience of being a hostage. Two of my family members were held hostage and Mary Quin's description of what happened during and after that life changing event rang so true to me. She touches very delicate subjects with clarity and understanding that was obviously hard-fought. Marvelous book and I thank the author for `risking' and writing this important piece of literature.

I always over-prepare for trips and in this case bought no less than 5 books on Rocky Mountain National Park. I wanted to make sure I got in the best hikes in during the 4 days I was there without getting lost or wasting time. This fine book was very well written and by far my favorite for a quick bottom line breakdown of each hike. Loved the 1 to 5 star rating for Scenery /Trail Condition/ Child Friendly/ Difficulty/ Solitude. This along with distance, time and Outstanding Features for each hike. A clear trail map and a graph showing elevation gain across miles were the cherries on the top. Everything you need! There was also the necessary full description of each hike but that's not really needed until you hit the trail.With something like 500 choices in this massive park, I was getting overwhelmed with information while deciding which hikes to endeavor. This was the one book that made these decisions possible. The quick reference layout I described meant I could continue to look back at multiple hikes without re-reading a long description.This book was by no means a comprehensive guide to the park but was more than most visits will be able to make use of. This along with the ultra comprehensive Rocky Mountain National Park: The Complete Hiking Guide by Lisa Foster were the two books that were taking up precious space in my backpack while on-trail. Thanks to the Author Kim L. for this outstanding guide.

Loved the trip to Rocky Mountain Natl Park, and this book was our go to guide for hikes. Had nice explanations, nice pictures, elevation charts, and easy to read font. Durable pages to withstand the hikes themselves. Highly recommended

Great overall book for the park, would be nice if it went more into depth particularly with the south east Wild Basin area but I can't complain, the book does its job and does it well.

This book has a limited number of hikes...about 30. But it is organized well so you have all the info about a certain hike all in one place. Unlike some books where you have to flip back and forth to find the altitude gain, topo info, trail head, etc.

This purchased along side a NG topo are an invaluable tool.

If you have visited Florence, and liked it, you'll enjoy re-experiencing your visit via Williams Sonoma Foods of the World series cookbook 'Florence' through classic recipes and large photographs of the regional dishes. The recipes are authentic to Tuscano, easy to prepare, delicious, and require ingredients that are attainable in the US. The book is good sized, easy to read (no teeny tiny text that requires a magnifying glass), and inspires spur-of-the-moment answers to, "What's for dinner?" This is a serious book for conscientious people who love to cook.

Many visitors to San Francisco spend a majority of their time on Fisherman's Wharf and in the immediate area, where there are indeed plentiful choices of delicious local specialties such as steamed crab, clam chowder and sour dough bread. However, there are many neighborhood establishments available to those who have more time to explore and seek out the smaller not so touristy locations. There are many ethnic neighborhoods in San Francisco where you will find such restaurants and non ethnic areas as well where good food is available. This book, which includes many recipes also provides good suggestions for the food varieties that you will find.

As a resident of San Francisco who loves his city, I am hardly the most objective reviewer of this book, but I do think this is a worthy if rather cursory overview of the culinary treats and idiosyncratic dining experiences that make up the best of what this city has to offer to local and tourist alike. Chuck Williams has established one of the more unavoidable upscale gourmet store chains in Williams-Sonoma, and this tome is the latest in a series of cookbooks focused on the premiere food capitals of the world. The first third is actually a well-organized explanation of what makes San Francisco unique from its culinary history to the distinctive flavors currently found in its major neighborhoods. There are sections on local specialties such as artisan bread, coffee, wine, Asian produce and chocolate. The breezy but informative text is by Janet Fletcher.The recipes actually don't start until page 79, but the 45 selections all look tasty and not overly complex to prepare. I have always had good luck with the recipes in the Williams-Sonoma catalog, and this one is proving to be no exception so far. Personally I have tried making the orecchiette with broccoli rabe; the braised chicken with tomato, pancetta and zinfandel; and the stir-fried long beans with Thai chile paste. All were hits with friends, though I would think items such as Chinese long beans may be harder to find outside the major metropolitan areas. There are even snippets of local information interspersed among the recipes. The book is also abundant in nice color photographs courtesy of Jean-Blaise Hall, though I wish the editors would have included captions so you know where some of the places are. Highly recommended for those who left their palettes in San Francisco.

I lived in San Francisco for several years and had to privledge to become familiar with the city's fantastic cuisine. This book is part of the Williams-Sonoma series focusing on cities with unique culinary traditions and letting the reader get to know both the city and the local food.San Francisco is more than just a cookbook. The introduction provides an overview of the city and the important culinary influences. The book then dedicates about 40 pages to discussing local specialties, both their origins and how they're made, ranging through artisan bread, coffee & tea, beer, wine, dim sum, asian produce, local cheese and chocolate.There are only 45 recipies, but they cover a wide variety from "steamed shrip dumplings" and "quesadillas with chorizo and jack cheese" to "slow roasted king salmon with braised lentils" to "buttermilk panna cotta." Insets scattered among the recipies provide backgroup information, culinary tips, or pairing tips such as dessert wines. Each recipe is clearly detailed and beautifully photographed. You also don't need to be a gourmet cook to follow the clear directions!This book provides a beautiful and delightful culinary tour through San Francisco, and is well worth adding to a personal library.

I have all the Foods of the World books, I really enjoy them. The beginning of the book starts with info about Florence, the markets, the common food staples and the history of them. Then it goes through recipes of classic dishes from the area, from antipasti to desserts. Great for cooks who genuinely want to learn the building blocks of cooking from certain regions.

Florence is a glorious place and books/recipes connect you with the feel of travel. I purchase these kinds of books to reacquaint me with visits. I do try the recipes, but that's only for fun and what I can translate to home. I recommend such books, lest I forget the memories and tastes of the experience. Pat Smith

Doug Menuez is an award-winning documentary photographer whose varied career over thirty years began in 1981 at The Washington Post, then as a freelancer for Time, Newsweek, Life, Fortune, The New York Times Magazine, and many more publications. His many awards include honors from Communication Arts, the Kelly Awards, AOP London, and Photo District News, among others. He has been exhibited in solo and group shows in the US and Europe. Stanford University Library acquired his extensive archive of more than 1 million photographs and created the Douglas Menuez Photography Collection at Stanford University Library. He is based in New York City.

More than 100 photographs documenting Silicon Valley's rise, all in black and white. Features many of the famous key players of the time, and also those whose contributions did not receive the attention they deserved. Steve Jobs is there, of course, (the beginning of the book is devoted to the creation and launch of the NeXT computer), as are Marc Andreesen, Steve Capps, Susan Kare, John Warnock, Clement Mok, Ross Perot, and even President Clinton. Far from "glamour shots," these photos capture non-posed reality, with all of the intensity, exhilaration, and exhaustion that was everyday life for those who sought to change the world. Menuez's captions, and especially his thoughtful assessment of the evolution of the industry, are valuable additions. I enjoyed this book very much.

A talented photographer is given unprecedented access to Silicon Valley's otherwise paranoid-about-secrecy young companies and this book is what ensues. Menuez tries to tell a cohesive story about a time and place that transcends any individual company, and he largely succeeds. However, I would argue that some of the artistic choices made were not particularly valuable. Out of the 250,000 photos he took, some of Menuez's choices for the book of about 250 seem bizarre. Sure, empty Chinese food take-out cartons tell a story, but a story worth printing full page?None the less, this book is an enjoyable, quick read (about 2-3 hours of careful study), and some of the photographs of Steve Jobs in particular, are spectacular. I would not recommend this book as first introduction to the story of Silicon Valley, but it's certainly an excellent additive piece.

I have wished for a hardback photo documentary publication on Steve Jobs to mirror Isaacson's biography, and this comes the closest. About a third of this book is devoted to Steve, the remainder to others of the same era in Silicon Valley. Not a great deal of verbiage, photos were powerful enough. A great tribute to the many people during the early years of technology leaders of California.In addition to my copy, I ordered extra copies to send to friends and neighbors in the Bay Area as gifts who also knew Steve in his earlier years and of which one who reconnected with him in their 50th year.

I know I love getting all access to places that other photographers don't get access to. The one thing you never will mow until a much later time is if you have all access to history.In this case Photographer Doug Menuez worked his way in to get all ACCESS to some of the tech visionaries of our time. He was there with Steve Jobs as he started NEXT, he was there with Intel founders as well as many other companies that we all know by name today.When I looked at the photos in "Fearless Genius" I sit there in awe of the access and history that he made with his images. I get asked all the time what inspires me or what do I do when I am in a photographic rut? The simple answer is I look at photo books and instantly find inspiration.

Indeed, how do you ever photograph the creative process, especially one that applies to software which you can't even touch? I love this book because it's the first photojournalistic treatment I've come across that captures the moments within the moments at tech companies here in the Valley that I've spent my career at. It's all here, literally, in black and white.The images look a bit dated now, but good or bad, not much has changed other than the computers and the fashions (the fashion less than the computers interestingly). What hasn't changed at all is the expressions on peoples faces as we do what we do. :D

One can hardly resist not opening this book. For those of us who were not physically present during the dawning of the digital revolution in Silicon Valley, this book gives us a window into that world through Doug Menuez's captivating camera lens. The black and white pictures let us view intently the intensity and innovation emanating from the brilliant young minds that would change the world forever. In addition to the dynamic images, the stories accompanying the photos as told by Menuez are equally as interesting. Thank you Mr. Menuez for bringing this book into our homes and hearts, and inspiring a new generation of "fearless geniuses" as well!

I purchased this priceless book while dubbing an old VHS tape I had of Molly Neill (Molly O'Neil's New York) It was because of this tape that I got to try some of the fabulous, gastronomical restaurants that are mentioned in this gigantic book. The book is a compilation of many mouth-watering recipes of old, traditional and new restaurants, delis, bistros, and multicultural cafes in NYC. There are many background stories of how such restaurants got started, and how and why they prepare their delectable dishes. If you love the city of New York, this book should be a treasure on your shelf.

I am a New Yorker now living in the Pacific Northwest. Before I left NY, my friends gave me this cookbook to help remind me of the good food I was leaving behind. I have enjoyed both the stories and the recipes in the book so much that the binding broke. The worst thing was that my absolute favorite recipe "Estee Lauder's Beef and Barley Soup" must have fallen out of the book and it was lost. I tried everything to find the recipe elsewhere, including on the web, but the only place that I can find it is in this cookbook. So I bought a new copy! The cole slaw recipe is also so great that I have been told I could sell my cole slaw to restaurants. There are many other really delicious recipes here. The book is hard to find at this point so if you want it, get it.

This is a really great cookbook. Not only does it give you recipes that you will not find anywhere else, but also give you secret eating and shopping places that not even most local New Yorkers Know about. A lot of the recipes are secret pass downs. Well worth the price, I have referred to mine over and over. If your from the tri-state area or Long Island and have moved to another location, this is the cookbook to make you homesick. 5 stars. Enjoy. Makes a great gift to any cook.

I've had this cookbook for years and have bought it as gifts for others (as I am about to do again!) If you love New York or always wanted to visit NYC, this is such a nice piece of NY history via food. Famous food recipes like NY Cheesecake, the Black and White cookie and more. Backgrounds on where recipes originated from and old time New Yorkers telling their stories. Really, just a unique and different cookbook with some awesome recipes!!

This is a very fun cookbook to read, there are so many interesting stories about foods, stores and people in New York. There are many recipes I love from this cookbook; including Oscar De La Rente's Pumpkin & Crabmeat Soup, Tessie's Pastitcio, Carrot Top's Carrot cake and the many cheesecake recipes. I have found the recipes to be excellent and have never had problems with any of them. This is a wonderful gift for people who live or grew up in NY as it has great nostaligic info. I highly recommend this book.

These recipes range from fantastic to not very good to overly simplistic. But the stories of people who make up the various food cultures of New York are great! I have had this book for years but just bought one as a gift for my New Yorker niece.

Fun reading, and lots of great recipes. I bought this just for the Ebinger's Blackout Cake (you have to be from Brooklyn!).
