Robert C. O’Brien was born in Brooklyn, New York. He attended Williams College and graduated from the University of Rochester. He was a writer and editor for Newsweek, National Geographic, and other publications. He lived in New York City and then in Washington, DC, with his wife and four children. I'll skip the details of the story and its writing, as other reviewers can attest to the quality of the book. Instead, I want to comment on how this book has the power to change a child's behavior and make him love books.I was first introduced to this book almost 35 years ago. As a recently immigrated child having difficulties adjusting to the school, I got into a great deal of trouble for acting out in the classroom.A kind teacher who saw my potential assigned the book to me during a parent-teacher conference. It made a huge impact on me -- it might seem like hyperbole, but this book may well have shaped my life. It instilled a great hunger for reading, and a love of learning.Over the years, I had forgotten the details of the story, but not its broad outlines. Two of the (to me) central themes: engineering and self-sufficiency, sticks with me to this day.I now have my own kids. I have been increasingly concerned that the older one had not yet developed a sufficient interest in reading. I tried to get them started on this book, but was initially met with indifference when I tried to read the opening chapter to them. My wife did not back me up on this at first, either.But I persisted, and after a couple more tries, reading little by little at first before bedtime, I got the boys interested in the story. The real breakthrough came a few chapters in, when the boys begged to keep going. By the time we finished the book, they were fully absorbed into the book - there were nights when I (or my wife, who had also gotten into the book) were reading for nearly an hour! Some nights, we simply read it out to them. Other nights, the boys stayed up to read the words along with us.They have now asked to have other long-form stories. I think the boys have now graduated from short 10-page picture books.One of the best part of all this came this morning, about two weeks after we had finished the book. The boys aunt and cousins came over to visit, and the older one excitedly shared this book, reading it out to his aunt!

I grew up with the animated film from the early 80’s and picked up the book in grade school, but declined due to “not being like the movie”...years later as an adult, I appreciate the Book way more than the movie. The book is a more in depth story that Don Bluth changed quite a bit in the film. (Still enjoy the film, but not as much as the book!) This Book is a treasured gem for all ages whether young or old or for the young at heart!!:)

I had heard of Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, but somehow got through my childhood without ever having read it. My 11 –year and 9-year old sons were reading it for their youth book club this last month. I read it with 9-year old Daniel in the evenings using the flip-flop technique. I would read a page and then he would read one.Mrs. Frisby is a widowed mouse with four young children living in a field. Her youngest son, Timothy is very ill and unfortunately it is time to move to summer quarters before Farmer Fitzgibbon starts to plow his fields. Mrs. Frisby seeks help amongst her neighbors and is told by a wise owl to get help from the Rats. When Mrs. Frisby meets the rats, she discovers far more about them and her late husband than she had ever imagined. Will they be able to save Timothy before the plow comes?Daniel and I both greatly enjoyed the story as did Kile as well. We had to have a discussion about it after we all finished. I fell asleep one night and couldn’t read further so Daniel took the book and finished it himself that night, I had to catch up the next day to see how it ended! It was a great heroic tale of Mrs. Frisby and her love for her children, but the entire rats sequence was very intriguing. Daniel loved finding out where they came from, but was a bit stressed out about the more suspenseful parts of the novel. We still want to know who the mysterious two rats were in the end! I really liked the ambiguous ending and the questions of ethics and morality that permeated the story.Overall, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH is a wonderful fantasy novel that will delight readers of all ages.Book Source: The Kewaunee Pubic Library

I read this book for the first time in third grade (several decades ago), and it remains one of my favorite books of all time. I bought it as a gift for my nephew recently, but ended up re-reading it myself. I enjoyed it just as much as the first time I read it. In fact, I didn't want it to end, and wanted to hear a lot more of the story of the rats. A great story, highly recommended for kids (and adults).

And, that the suppressed nobility ofcreatures in any context often must be encouraged (aka - even reverting to subterfuge) to overcome adversity andwork toward a greater good and the collective benefit. I have such wonderful memories of this story! I read it in elementary school and it really stuck with me. My daughter loves to read (she's 8 but a bit advanced for her age) so I got this book for her. We decided to read it together-actually she read it to me. It was lovely to re-experience the story and to share it with her. I recommend it for advanced 3rd grade to normal 5th grade readers. Compelling but easy to follow story.

Saw this at my local bookstore and checked with Amazon.com and was happy to purchase it online for a substantial discount here. This book is great for anyone beginning to setup their own home theater and for those that really like to get into the meat of this hobby. The pages are easy to read with good, clear black and white photos spread throughout.What this book offers are those uncommon tips and tricks that big name electronics stores don't want you to know about. This book alone will save me hundreds of dollars from all the information provided inside. It's doesn't have too much techno-babble but it won't feel like a crash course booklet leaving you wanting more. Intelligently laid out and highly recommended.

I purchased this book to gain more knowledge of home theater and audio equipment. My expectation was that the book will cover those topics in great depth. However I found that this book covers a lot of basic stuffs ( a little too much for me). I would recommend this book if you have no clue about TV, audio or home theater. That's the reason I gave only three stars. It is sole based on my expectation.The book is greatly written and easy to understand.

Home Theater Hacks is the perfect book for anyone in the planning, building, or improvement phase of their home theater. This book really covers everything that has to do with a home theater: from selecting the right components, to component configuration, to cabling, to making your theater look awesome. This book is a must read before you start your home theater.The book begins with a very thorough and impressive discussion of how and where to buy home theater components. The author discusses receivers (both audio and video), DVD players, TVs (both HD and standard), as well as the ins and outs of buying online versus at a local store. This discussion naturally leads to a very large section on "configuration", which includes such things as how to install and configure a terrestrial television antenna, how to match your subwoofer to your room, and everything you ever wanted to know about cables. I particularly enjoyed the author's discussion of the modern myth of expensive cabling. He provides a very good explanation of what "good enough" means (you wouldn't put gold water pipes in your home, why spend $100 on a gold cable?).As mentioned, this is a very interesting and useful book for anyone planning or currently working on a home theater. It dispelled a lot of myths I had heard in the past, and provides clear explanations as to why many of these myths are false. Additionally, I found that the book provided sound advice in the purchase and configuration of home theater components.

Sometimes the Hacks books go a little too far. The iPod book for example spent eighteen pages on how to mold a new iPod console for your car. It would have been very easy for this book to go over that edge but it keeps it's focus and stays well within the realm of practical advice to enhance your home theater.The sections on how to enhance your projection TV is excellent and very practical. There is good coverage of speaker calibration, system maintenance, and TiVo. There is also good material on acoustic tremblers which will bring the experience really close to home.A must buy book for home theater enthusiasts. There is lots of material here that you can find on the web, but it's better organized, illustrated and explained here.

I plan to return this ebook as it will not display correctly on either devise I attempted. Don't buy if you plan to use a kindle or ipad.

If you're taking a prof who makes you take an exam as it was in 1700 this guide is perfect. If you have Wolfe at UF Law, this book should be a requirement for the midterm.

This book has been very helpful for me as a 1L. Why the digital format is a bit wonky to get used to at first, the book itself is extremely easy to read. Oh yeah, did I say useful? Buy it, you won't regret it when your 1L exam starts asking you about future interests.

This is for my fish and herpetology class at Purdue University. Its definitely a hand sized book that is pretty thick. Personally I don't like how the pictures of the fish(i'm a visual learner) are spaced out in the book. The descriptions definitely require some background knowledge but is a good book for intermediate learners!

this Peterson Field Guide is a solid and handy review of US freshwater fishes, but with limited scientific details and life histories due to size constraints.

There's no question of his being pushed--several others saw him stumble--but the police investigate, and remember Georgie from her earlier adventure in Her Royal Spyness...unfondly. And it isn't helped when she and Hanni go to a bookshop in Wapping (a rather unsavory neighborhood) and find the young man Hanni had said invited them to the shop (where he worked) very recently stabbed to death. And later, at a house party they were both invited to (at the queen's behest), Hanni's chaperone, a baroness, dies of an apparent heart attack. And there's a lot of rumbling about communists and fascists in both Germany and the UK, as things are building up toward Hitler's coming to power in the former. Lots of fun, like the first book only rather better to my taste. ''''-

I'm happy that I read Bowen's novel In Fairleigh Field before I started the Royal Spyness series, since I know from the former that the author can indeed write well. I was almost tempted to believe that the Spyness series was ghosted by a less capable writer, since there is a marked decline in every aspect of craft in the latter. Particularly clumsy is Bowen's need to reiterate in every Spyness book the details (in virtually the same words) of her sleuth's background: her exact relation to Britain's Royal Family, her own family background and members, her best friend's story, etc. Rather than using a deft phrase here and there, the reader has to endure the backstory again and again, in every single book, and A Royal Pain is no exception. As well, Bowen's habit of resolving (often by an unexpected event) the mystery in the final few pages means that the reader is subjected to chapter after chapter of passive, monologic introspection, while the sleuth appears to wander aimlessly in search of a solution. Having said all that, I must add that if you're looking for a light read in a beach chair, the comfort of familiar characters, and no literary challenges, A Royal Pain - along with the other Royal Spyness books - is just the ticket.

I found this book entertaining, but it is pure fantasy with little connection to reality. I was intrigued by the premise, that a member of the royal family should be a sleuth. I was thinking of something like a female Lord Peter Whimsey, but Rhys Bowen falls far short of the brilliant writing of Dorothy Sayers. For instance, the author tries to capture the dialect of upper-class, aristocrats in Pre WW II England, but if a reader is at all familiar with literature of the period, she will find that there are too many anachronisms for the dialogue to ring true.That being said, this is a good book to take to the pool or the beach. The reader can enjoy a few hours of light reading, ignore the niggling voices that say, "This could never happen!" and be assured that goodness will prevail.

I have read (and reread) all of the "Her Royal Spyness" series, and have enjoyed them all. I love the time period when the books take place, partly because things are changing in the world. Britain is trying to come to terms with the end of its imperialistic rule of much of the world and the end of the attendant wealth it enjoyed. The rigid class system is changing as well, and the role of women in society, too. Lady Georgiana is trapped between her station and her poverty. She is penniless, and yet a royal and not allowed to earn a living. As a mere woman, all she is currently allowed and trained to do is marry well. We sympathize with her efforts to make more of herself than society dictates.Don't get me wrong, though. These books are cozies, and though Georgie's situation and the times are difficult, the books are blithe and full of humor and endearing characters. They are very fun books to read, and each time I read a new one, I anxiously await the arrival of all of the funny and delightful characters. They often appear by chance and coincidence, but rather than coming off as a cheesy gimmick, the surprise appearance of each character is a fun plot staple. I find myself wondering with anticipation when each of these well-developed and entertaining characters will appear: her good-hearted but vague and helpless brother Binky; his snippy sourpuss wife Fig; Georgie's breezy, bright-young-thing friend Belinda; her self-absorbed famous actress mother; her kindly Cockney grandfather, and the charming and mysterious love interest Darcy O'Mara. Another favorite character added in Royal Blood is Queenie, the hapless yet spunky and irresistible lady's maid-in-training.Besides these recurring characters, we meet the British royal family and other famous people of the time throughout the series, including Noel Coward, Coco Chanel, and the abrasive, ambitious and widely-disliked Wallis Simpson. Though fictionalized, of course, they are believable and entertaining. Even minor characters are colorful and full of tongue in cheek humor as the books gently poke fun at nonsensical social traditions and hypocritical people.Georgie herself is the good-natured glue that holds the series together, and I really enjoy watching her as she grows into a capable and even formidable young woman who is stronger and smarter than she ever imagined.

This is a great little (I finished it in about an hour or so) exposition on the book of Obadiah. Even though the biblical book is only 21 verses long, it has always been a difficult book for me to wrap my head around. Whitworth's book finally helped me understand what it's all about.This book also reinforced what the Lord has been teaching me lately about my feelings toward those who are antagonistic toward the Christian faith. God has been helping me to see that those folks are acting like heathens because they ARE heathens. I shouldn't be surprised when they lash out at Christians because they are enemies of God. And I was exactly like them before God saved me. I need to be praying for these present day Edomites rather than being angry toward them.

This book has some good information, but I expected a bit more regarding the historical understanding of the nation of Edom.

As with all of Michaels books they aren't going to bog the reader down or confuse them as a commentary might. They make sense. Michael constantly brings the reader to a place where they can see the implications of the minor prophets in both their immediate context, the context of the NT fulfillment, and the impact they have on the church today. This short book will be a blessing to you and I definitely recommend it!

As I have grown older into my senior years I have developed more of an open mind to reading about unusual and even strange topics. As a scientific minded person for most of my life I disregarded mystical and pseudoscience subjects; however, I did find this 268 page hardcover book (The Field: The quest for the secret force of the universe by Lynne McTaggart) very interesting and well researched. I purchased this volume at a bargain price on Amazon.This book covers the results of various experiments in Quantum Physics, both early research and contemporary research studies. This book is organized in three parts with 12 detailed chapters covering the following subjects: The prologue gives us a look at “the coming revolution.” Part one (The resonating universe) covers light in the darkness, the sea of light, beings of light, the language of the cell and the resonating with the world. Part two (The extended Mind) explains the creative observer, sharing dreams, the extended eye and the endless here and now. Part three (Tapping into the field) covers the healing field, telegram from Gaia and the zero point age.This book is thought provoking and explores the relationship between all of us and the universal energy fields. Some scientists believe that in the future science will look like magic. I had read this book once, quite a few years ago, and just like that time, it changed my view of the life process.While my views of how life seems to work have been evolving, Lynne McTaggart's descriptions of the scientific process, her discoveries, and her thoughts on their meaning prompted me to revisit some of my own. I loved her descriptions of the interactions between scientists, and how they met wish such resistance from those in the mainstream of the scientific community.I would highly recommend this book to anyone beginning to look into field medicine, energy work, or wanting to see how science really works.

I wish more books were as progressive and ahead of their time as this one. The author correctly points out that most scientists are "subtracting God out of their equations"; for almost the entire book I thought she was doing the same thing, until the very end where she revealed that she was not doing that. Interestingly enough I think my favorite parts were the end, but also the preface. I like how she rightfully questions Darwinism and Newtonian physics. This book has a lot of useful information on Consciousness research. She also said that it seems clear that consciousness resides in our entire bodies; I think that was proven decades ago in fact. How else can a bacteria be alive, when all it is is a jelly bean with an RNA strand inside(no brain). Lots of organisms do not have brains but they are fully alive and have their own free will.I also really liked when she was talking about how this Zero Point Field could be used, in the future, for an endless energy source and for space travel. And I agree that everything that happens in our Universe is recorded in The Field as information.I think this book would benefit everyone, and I hope I can live to see the day when the notion that we live in a random, meaningless Universe dies a very hard and permanent death.
