Books like this are a treat for those of us who love to learn about music. I have learned so much from this book. Rock and Roll lovers will get a lot out of this book as it will allow you to learn about the blues musicians who your bands/musicians were influenced by.

The book was in excellent condition and arrived before projected date. I had a soft copy and love having it in hard cover for my permanently collection. This is one of the best resource books on the subject of the blues that I have found.

An excellent book. Lost original copy so owned it even though I had read it. Would make a great coffee book as its loaded with pictures along with excellent narrative.

We were looking for some background information of old time blues performers and their music and found this book, lovingly used but in great condition, and what a find! This goes waaaay back and talks about so many great people and the areas where the blues was born. Since reading we have been able to make a few purchases of great blues musicians (on Amazon, they have everything!) like Blind Lemon Jefferson, Leroy Carr, Dr. Ross, and so many more. It's so great to now have such a valuable reference book so we can look up song titles and see who wrote/who recorded them. Would recommend this to anyone who wants to learn more about this national "treasure" of music and musicians.

A pretty comprehensive history of the blues with many interesting photographs. I sometimes skipped around to escape endless facts. Overall enjoyable and interesting.

Short review: This is an excellent over-view of the blues. It provides some technical information and rich detail, but it is still very readable.I have one criticism. A section on British Blues and 1960s/70s blues rock in the US, UK, and Australia should have been included. Some of the best blues songs of the era (for example, Hendrix's Red House) were a part of this development of the blues.

My wife and I read The Year 1,000 by this (British I think) author, and loved it, so we looked for more of his works. Lacey writes with a straightforward, clear and entertaining style. This is a right-down-the-middle history of Saudi Arabia, with great details about the rise of Sunni jihad terrorism, Wahhabism, Al Qaeda and Bin Laden. It explores the struggle between Islamic fundamentalists and modernists in Saudi Arabia. This is neither a conservative nor a liberal book; Lacey says both positive and negative things about George Bush when he feels it is called for. He has lived in the Kingdom for many years, and obviously has an affection for the Saudis--but not all of them, and his views are not blinded by that. This is an essential book for understanding both the Middle East and the terrorist threat we are dealing with. I highly recommend it. Inshallah you will read it.Robert A. Lacey has produced a very interesting history of Saudi Arabia (and by extend the House of Saud) from circa 1979 to 2009. He has managed to balance a chronological history of events in those tumultuous 30 years whilst also exploring themes such as the appeasement of religious in the wake of the 1979 storming of the Grand Mosque, modernisation, interaction with the West and the status of the minority Shia community.Whilst Lacey has included some small amount of social commentary, ie a brief discussion of same sex lesbian relationships, rape, the social repression of Saudi society the book is very much in the Great Man school of history so dont buy this book if your looking for a man on the street view of Saudi society. Otherwise it is excellent.I dont know if Lacey will live long enough to produce a trilogy but it is also worth mentioning that this book will be interesting to pick up in 20 years to see if some of the factors Lacey identifies have come to fruition. For example he talks about King Abdullah taking a strategic decision to seek other allies to the United States in 2004 in the wake of the invasion of Iraq. It will be interesting to see how this develops over the decades ahead and how prescient Lacey has been on this score and others.

I have been living in Saudi Arabia for a year now and I purchased this book to try and gain a better understanding of the people and the country. Unfortunately, most of the books on offer are written by expats and thus you will not get a balanced perspective of this exceptionally enigmatic country. Saying that though, Robert Lacey, has researched this subject very well and was granted privileged access to a number of subjects. He has put together a fantastic personal insight. I believe that the book is banned out here. Speak to any of the expats though and they will tell you that this is the definitive work on the country. I recommend this to any person travelling out to KSA, be it for business or to relocate. Just bear in mind that the locals will have a very different view surrounding many of the issues raised by Lacey.

Sprawling, conflicted and utterly fascinating. Like the mysterious country it aims to comprehend. As someone who has spent some time in the Kingdom, I can say that the book deals very carefully, fairly and skillfully with the many complex forces at work in Saudi. It is a sober but hopeful vision of a country that has so much to offer the world...if only it could get out of its own way.

This is a well written and thorough history of the Saudi kingdom and the royal family. The reader gets a full picture of Saudi domestic politics as well as the personalities of the various family members. This book enables the reader to understand why the Saudis act, react or refuse on an international level. The events of 9/11, the Gulf Wars, other Arab states, the Palestinians, and the Saudi relationship with the west, particularly America, are highlighted. King Abdullah is now 89 years old. It is worth reading this book knowing that Saudi Arabia will continue to be a powerful influence in that part of the world.

Like Robert Lacey's first book on Saudi Arabia, Inside the Kingdom is a masterpiece of style, substance, and critical reporting with cultural empathy. One of our best writers of living history.

This is a very well researched and written account of the major events that have taken place in the Kingdom over the past 30 years. The description of the ruling Al-Saud family is very good and the portraits of the individual members are, in my opinion, very acurate.The rise of Osama bin Laden is very well accurately portrayed and the author has been prolific in his sources, including personal interviews.As a resident of Saudi Arabia, many of the characters are well know to me and I have met a few of them - this, of course, does a lot to bring the book to life for me. Having said that, I would not hesitate in recommending this as an introduction and explanation to what is currently going on in Saudi Arabia and the wider Middle East. The upheaval in Libya, Bahrain, Egypt etc becomes a lot clearer after reading books such as this.Thououghly recommended if you have any interest in the region.

This book takes on the mass of contradictions that are the Kingdom of Arabia, and the modern world of the Islam. The author has lived in the kingdom, and so writes from personal observation rather from abstract academic study. It is a real eye opener! Today, when the US news media shows us the world only as it has immediately and directly affected the US, this book provides the background for the 'why' and 'how' of this powerful and most influential of Muslem countries.

Lowell Dingus, Ph.D., is a research associate at the American Museum of Natural History in New York as well as at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. He has directed numerous significant fossil exhibits and has led various paleontological expeditions around the world, including the Patagonian excavation that uncovered the first fossilized skin from an embryonic dinosaur. He has coauthored several books, including Walking on Eggs and The Mistaken Extinction. Lowell lives in New York City.

A very thoroughly researched book about a fossil collector in the late 1800's. The book is well written although the author only touches on his poker playing in Patagonia. Everything about this book is five stars with one exception: it is hard to read and even harder to finish. For me readability is 3 stars and research is 5, hence the four star rating. I liked the book but am not keeping in my library because I can't see myself reading it over.

Though his name isn't one the average person will recognize, the legacy of fossils he collected in a brief career make John Bell Hatcher worthy of the title of this book.A farmer's son, Hatcher labored as a coal miner to earn the money for his education. Introduced to Othniel Charles Marsh, the nation's first professor of paleontology and curator of Yale's Peabody Museum of Natural History, Hatcher informed Marsh he wanted "..a job collecting fossils, anywhere, anytime, at any salary."Impressed, Marsh sent him west where he began a remarkable career of finding, preserving and shipping to major museums some of the most impressive specimens to be found in the United States and Patagonia. He changed employers several times before becoming a curator at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Museum. Troubled by ill health throughout his life, Hatcher died at the young age of 42.Unfortunately, the biography falls short of giving us insight into the 'real man' behind the legendary collector whose finds are represented in some of the nation's most prestigious museums.The copious excerpts from letters between Hatcher and his various employers do give evidence of the difficulties of field work in the 19th century and the cataloging of his finds will be of value to paleontology buffs. Despite this, the same documentation soon grows tedious for readers seeking more information about Hatcher than his carping about delays in payment and equipment inventories.Though I'd looked forward to reading this book, I'm sorry to say, for the most part, I found it dry as bones.

Much of the land is still relatively untouched.. I was surprised to find that Hatcher was a sickly child considering how much he pushed himself in physical and mental pursuits! I loved that he paid for his own college education during a time when most that would have grown up in similar circumstances would have struggled to even finish sixth grade.The multiple digs that he initiated and the many dinosaurs he found opened up a new world for the average person in the late 1800's. His research and documentation gave the world insight into the fearsome lizards that were being uncovered all over the world. His methods were adopted by so many.. and thankfully led to museums displaying the many dinosaur bones for the public to enjoy and also served to broaden many horizons!Somewhat of a dry read.. but a must have book for anyone who enjoys reading about scientific discoveries!

Eight years ago I read and reviewed a biography “Barnum Brown. The Man Who Discovered Tyrannosaurus rex” by Lowell Dingus and Mark Norell. The authors are a Research Associate in Vertebrate Paleontology and Chair of Paleontology, respectively, at AMNH. Since the authors have access to the Museum archives, which includes correspondence between Brown and AMNH over decades, this is a very detailed biography. There is a great deal of information on which specimens were discovered where and who said what about them. There are also a number of photographs of these expeditions in the field. However, I did complain in my review that it was somewhat hard to find the big picture about Brown within all the detail. Description after description of expeditions got a little much for me after a while. I also would have liked some discussion of the scientific relevance of the specimens Brown excavated, but did not find much.Dingus has a new biography “King of the Dinosaur Hunters,” which covers John Bell Hatcher (1861-1904). Hatcher is one of the first field workers to excavate fossils in the American West having been hired by O.C. Marsh (Yale University) in 1884. He also collected fossils for Princeton University (most notably on an expedition to Patagonia), and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. He is one of the first paleontologists to use a grid system to specify the exact location of fossils and one of the first to cover fossils with plaster jackets before removing them from the field. He is credited with discovering Triceratops and other horned dinosaurs, as well as describing (and mounting) the original Carnegie Diplodocus. There is an appendix of how many Hatcher specimens are in the collections of which museums.I found this tough reading. “King of the Dinosaur Hunters” is an even more extreme version of “Barnum Brown,” in the sense that there is even more detail about each individual expedition, and even less material about other aspects of the subject’s life. There is very little about Hatcher’s interactions with other paleontologists at the time, except those the reader infers from the letters. There is practically nothing about Hatcher’s personal life, except where his letters mention that his wife or one of his children is sick. Finally, there is very little about the scientific significance of Hatcher’s specimens. I was somewhat disappointed. “King of the Dinosaur Hunters” seems more a fossil catalog than a biography.

I have a whole list of projects I intend to create--and I know that each one will be classy and distinctive. The book is well written, easy to read and provides a number of projects geared for the garden that are fairly well illustrated and understandable. A lot of the projects were well beyond the novice and could be used for professional gardeners.

Really nice-looking projects with detailed instructions. I fell in love with their trellis pictures, and next spring I will be building the berry trellis, grape trellis, and a trellis for espalier apple trees. It does require access to power tools.
