In a day and age where overload is the norm, time and commitment is rare and valuable. Individuals will not give of their time and commitment easily. The sense of belonging is key to engaging organizational members. This is particularly true of organizations that rely on engaged and active members to meet their goals, fulfill their purpose and grow their membership. This book is an essential resource for organizational survival and thriving. The book I ordered was a hard bound edition that was advertised as good. I just fact this edition was in near new condition. That is great because I plan on using this book as road map in building our organization. The hard bound edition will last longer and take more use/abuse. The price for this used edition was lower than a new paper bound version. This was a great value.

I decided to read "Community: The Structure of Belonging" as we strive to build better community within the retail company where I work and am responsible for training and developing our employees. As many retailers and other far-flung organizations may experience, there is sometimes an isolation and even loneliness between those employees, who may go through new-hire training centrally but then must hone their practices and results independently of their co-workers. They may pick up ideas and tips occasionally from others, but most of how they eventually perform they learn on their own. It's this situation that's motivated me to work toward an online community where our employees could start to interact with each other. My mistaken impression before I read Peter Block's book was that together we could recognize and analyze each others' ideas and practices and then legislate the "best" practices from among those.After reading the book, I am more focused on the process with which we will do all this. Focusing more on the act of gathering people together either online or in-person, we can determine the best ways for our community of far-flung employees to start working together to improve everyone's success in what we will all accomplish. To risk the use of an old cliche, Block's suggestion is that it is the journey by which we do this more so than any final best practices that we may reach at the destination. So for the original goal that I set out to accomplish in buying this book, such a focus on the ongoing conversation and the ways we are interacting with each other may prove most effective as we establish such a community within our organization.What was unexpected and a huge plus were the comments Block makes about the way our American systems (i.e., economic, political, educational, social services, media) have become and made all of us so fragmented. I've read many books over the past year that lament how our government is hopelessly partisan, our classes are hopelessly unequal, our values are maker vs. taker, etc. All of those books explain the issues but few have good solutions. Block explains the problem much more elegantly -- that our individualistic narrative; the inward attention of our institutions, corporations and our professions; and the messages from our media all work to make us feel isolated and fragmented from everyone else. He suggests that building greater community among us and reversing the path we are on now is not through government, corporations or large institutions with mandates, budgets and power to make things better. Nor will some super leaders come in with the magical strategies to finally make things better. Rather, Block is saying that we can only do that for ourselves by deciding to work with others in our communities to make things better for everyone.So, this book is more than just an academic focus on what communities can do to change things for the better. It is the opposite of what Charles Murray set out to suggest in his inflammatory book "Coming Apart." But as some critics of Block suggest, his prescription to work together is not the answer in and of itself. It is the hard work cities, organizations, school systems, social service organizations, and citizens committees all must do to change the context of what they want to accomplish, create the gatherings and structure to start accomplishing the ends that we have so long been trying to reach.

This is a wonderful book. It is a very thourough handling of community (simply, people being together and interacting in a meaningful way), and not only the need for it in society, but also how to get it and strengthen it. It can be a little technical at times- he could do a better job “putting the cookies on the bottom shelf”, but it is well worth the read. He also discusses a rich selection of resources that influenced him, for anyone who wants to go deeper. I may yet do that.I would particularly recommend this book for pastors. I strongly feel every pastor should read this. Church should be a community, not an event, and to put it bluntly, the wonderful picture this author paints of what community should look like is only possible in the Church, and the Church has a responsibility to live into that.

The restoration of community is a vital need for us today. Block suggests that the first step to community is to quit thinking of community as a problem and instead to define it as conversations -- conversations of possibility. Block sees the role of leadership as convening small groups, which he sees as the unit of transformation. In starting the conversations in these groups, the leader needs to remember that questions are more transforming than answers; curiosity more useful than advice. He explains what questions have power and what questions squelch power. He also explains how to invite people, how to facilitate accountability and ownership, and the importance of physical space for meetings and how to design it. Having dealt with these issues a long time myself, I was pleased to see some of my wisdom validated and also to learn important new wrinkles about small groups and community.

Challenged both democratic and conservative ideologies. At times perhaps a little esoteric, but nonetheless, a strong application intended to transform our ideas about what it means to be a community, to live as empowered citizens rather than "consumers", stop waiting for leaders to save us, to restore trust where it is broken and ultimately (and after a long time of hard work and persistence) end political suffering. Block makes it seem doable. Found myself getting the most out of the details. Might not be great for skimmers.

Too often a builder's association has the upper hand in influencing county and municipal planning departments. This is an interesting book written by an automotive journalist, not an EV guy. He begins the story with a Caltech MIT electric auto race in the early 60's (Electro-vair vs. VW Bus). Then follows the next step with races in Australia won by GM's Sunraycer. At this point all the automakers are starting to give electric cars some thought. The chapters steadily chronicle the false starts of the EV1 ("Impact") and how Toyota took a risk to build the first Prius (gas was cheap when they began design). Some backstory on the Volt and Tesla's are included. He also has some chapters on hydrogen fuel cells, a technology which has gone nowhere. I think the Leaf must have just made it's first appearance at about the time he was was writing as he doesn't have much to say about it. The electric car story is moving on of course, but this is a fun read about who did what in the beginning.

The book provides some interesting insider history on the development of electric plug-in vehicles. The nature of changing technology requires newer editions and greater details of more recent developments and projections on the future of electric power and renewable energy in transportation and public transit.

I learned a lot from the book and the info moved along well and was good reading.

The 1968 Caltech and MIT race across the country in "electrics" was a chuckle at times but shows the ingenuity of engineers and back room tinkerers working as a team. This book should help people see why electrics are more efficient and our future w/renewables. The hesitation of men will surely evaporate when they realize an electric can "peel out! " The EV Grin is real! It is time to bury the dirty old gasoline engine. If a Honda Civic can be converted to electric in your garage then certainly these cars will be mainstream and at the Indy 500 soon. However, it is a bit rah-rah toward the subject of modern electrics. Author Fialka simply assumes that electric cars will save drivers money because electricity generally costs a bit less than gasoline, and that electric cars will help slow global warming, since they have no tailpipe emissions. He simply ignores the facts that electric cars are extremely expensive and require periodic battery replacement (getting a new battery pack installed in a Tesla is more expensive than simply buying a new Honda Civic). Regarding environmental advantages, he ignores that fact that the typical electric car is simply running on coal rather than gasoline, which is cleaner. Throw in the extremely limited range of electric cars and you have a vehicle that is simply a plaything of the rich, not a sensible investment for the average driver. When battery capacity is increased 50-fold, batteries drop in price, and the electric grid is powered by renewables, a Tesla might make sense. But none of that is likely to happen soon.

Many times before I even got to the table of contents did the publishers try to distance themselves from the content of the book and try to discredit the author. Let's be real. If you bought this book, you already know what you wanted to read. The disclaimer and the publishers preface has a very cringey toothpaste and orange juice feel to it, even going as far as to quote wikipedia. Your best bet is to avoid any pages with roman numerals in the beginning. They contain sneaky backhanded passive agressive insults towards the original author. That being said, the meat and potatoes of this book will be a permanent fixture in my small library of books in a time where history books are being altered and erased. I took a star off because of the beginning. Aside from that, the content was exactly what I wanted to read.

Top-notch information! The first chapter "Zetetic and Theoretic Defined and Compared" is a great eye-opener. Just those 5-pages will give you the desire to learn the truth. The book is "a little" technical; but the images and the examples are well presented and you do not have to be a techie to grasp what he is saying. Actually, for the level of science presented, it's really an easy read for a lay-person. You may not become a "flat-earther" (or maybe you will, lol); but this book will give you "pause" and realize the other side of the argument is not crazy at all. What we are told in modern times is what is "crazy." Take the plunge! You won't be wasting your time if you are seriously searching for answers and truth; to make up your own mind. p.s. Some have complained that their copy was not very legible. I have the Forgotten Books reprint. I suggest you order that one if you want to make sure you have a good reprint (Sorry to the other guys!!!).

The guy was clearly a good writer but an awful scientist. One of my favorite points that he makes is how the Earth must be flat or else we would see the curvature. I mean, Eratosthenes calculated the circumference of the Earth 2000 years before this was written, but the dude didn't think "Hm, maybe it's just a really big sphere."Thinking is hard. Buy this book if you wanna know how NOT to do it. (I was just using it as a reference in a report as a great example how NOT to do science).

Read this book and go be a zeteticist and observe for yourself where you live and just what is the story with these lights helping us chart our days and months. They built temples and ziggaruts in the ancient world that are still aligned to the stars the same ones we see at night. I could go on, but search it out for yourself, this book is a great starting point

I've used Genki and Nakama, but I absolutely love Genki. I've used it in class and on my own. The terms are useful and the grammar is easy to understand. Would recommend for people who are in class and need the book, or people who are self-taught Japanese students.For those of you who are self-taught, it might be a good idea to get the workbook or at least do all of the activities and use a key or the CDs to check your answers.

I began studying Japanese language with the orange Genki book, four semesters ago. I find this the best text on the market. I am now entering my 5th semester and ready to take on the green book.The book is laid out in an easy to follow style beginning with a dialogue, new vocabulary, and grammar points. In the last half of the chapter there are drills that help you with each grammar point. In the back there are kanji drills and other useful language phrases and situational tips. The text is clear and easy to follow. This is a comprehensive language course.I highly recommend this text.

I've tried many things, Rosetta Stone,Internet help web sites, audio tapes, almost everything you can imagine to learn japanese. But the Genki textbooks are what has really worked for me. If you put enough time and energy into dedicating yourself to studying the books material. You will definitely be on a good start with your journey into learning Japanese. I do wish there was a book 3.

This book is amazing as for learning Japanese. I got this book for my class and it does helps out a lot. They way they integrate English into japanese makes it so much easier to understand. It really helps me put my sentences together as I write or speak it, which is a plus for me or anyone willing to learn. I would also recommend the first book as well so it can get you prepared for this version.

Got to speak the Japanese I learned from Genki for a lot of situations in Japan recently, people love it when you don't have to use hand signals and stare at them confused like a deer in headlights. Great stuff, buy it.
