As other reviewers have stated, this is an excellent guide for adults who have already read the Narnia books. It would be a great resource for people such as Sunday School teachers or other Christian educators who can simplify the information to make it more accessible for children. Because of the price-point to which this book is targeted, it is printed on relatively low-quality paper and in a relatively small type font, so for those reasons I downgraded my rating from a 5-star to a 4-star. Otherwise, I recommend it for all those who desire a better understanding of the Narnia series.

Wavering between 3/4: Very nice for an avid fan-- but this is for avid fans only. It's written like an encyclopedia, so you cannot read up on one character, for ex., without finding out what that character did in any one of the other series books... so read the entire series and then come back once you've memorized it all. I'm a fan, so it didn't turn me (completely) off, but it's unfortunate not to be able to share this with someone new to the series.

Mr Ford does a fantastic job covering the Chronicles. This exhaustive resource is detailed, on point, and sprinkled with the author's opinion only slightly and when appropriate. His in-depth knowledge of Lewis and other sources is one of the most remarkable features that the reader can observe from this book. Mr Ford has done his research! He also approaches the Chronicles with respect and from a Christian angle, which does justice to Lewis' writings.This is a superb "companion" to any Narnia fan, and I couldn't recommend it enough.

Dr. Paul F. Ford's "Companion to Narnia, Revised Edition" is a wonderful resource for those who wish to have a comprehensive understanding of C.S. Lewis's "Chronicles of Narnia". Everything that you come across throughout Narnia is given careful consideration, with reference to the specific page numbers in the books. I would highly recommend, to anyone who has interest in Narnia, to purchase this book.On the down-side, the actual book that I received, new from Amazon, was of decidedly poor quality. It appears to have about a half-dozen pages, in the second half of the book, that were misprinted. The lower half of these pages were originally blank. In order to rectify this problem, someone decided to physically paste the missing information onto each affected page. I suppose I would rather have the information, than not, but I wasn't exactly pleased with the condition of the book.Overall, purchasing the book would be a good investment for fans of Narnia. However, be forewarned about the quality of the book, when purchased from Amazon. It may or may not be their fault, but I normally expect a higher-quality of material than what I received from this purchase.

If you liked the Narnian series as a child- revisit it as an adult with this companion and understand the literal, moral, allegorical, and anagogical levels. There is so much more to appreciate in CS Lewis' depth and wit.

I bought this based on several reviews that gave high praise to the recipes and story of Mr. Mixon. I was expecting a lot more from these recipes, even though the book clearly says "simple" right on the front of it.I get that Mr. Mixon is the "winningest man blah blah blah" and that his ego is understandably large. But, I don't want to read about how incredibly awesome this guy thinks he is when he provides zero recipes that back that up. I don't want to read a sales book that repeatedly says "use my xxx rub or xyz sauce that's available on my website" and gives a horrible alternative if you don't use his rub/sauce.I don't know where the folks who gave this book 4 stars and such high praise have found their other bbq recipes. But I don't want those books either if "Smokin" is such a massive improvement.The 3 recipes I've tried have been poor examples of BBQ. I've been smoking meat for 14 years and am not a novice.If you want a great cook book, with a excellent story as well, buy Chris Lilly's book Big Bob Gibson BBQ. If you want a ton of recipes, simple to extreme (to test yourself), get Paul Kirks Championship bbq. You will be way better off without adding any of your hard earned money to the bank account of the über Q master. He's going to keep on kickin ass anyway, so he'll be fine.Update: Returned the book to Amazon

I judge a cookbook, and I have over 200, by how many dog ears I have after reading it. I did not mark one recipe from this book. The recipes are very simple and boring (sorry Myron). Here is just one example: Meatloaf ingredient list: Ritz crackers, egg, ketchup, bread and onion. Let me throw in one more. Smoked trout: trout , salt, Smoke. His brisket recipe calls for a 15-20 pounder to be cooked for 4 hours. Seriously, this is not a serious BBQ cookbook. I have to be this critical because the many positive reviews are misleading.

Apparently, when it comes to narcissistic, pompous, and obnoxiously self-important people, Myron Mixon is the Gordon Ramsay of barbecue. Save for the fact that, clearly, Ramsay has far more manners and class (and who knows...might even be better at barbecue).This book was more or less a waste of money. While it is long on Mixons' claims as to how wonderful he is...it's pretty meager on much of anything else. Lots of comments about this Mixon product here and that Mixon product there (...oh, I'm on TV too....and don't forget I also sell classes at my backyard smokers and grills, etc.)There is SOME small amount of solid material to be gleaned, if you work at it hard enough. And there are a few recipes. Most are pretty simple.Think I'll be returning my copy. I've little doubt that this one will soon be showing up on the $3 table down at Barnes & Noble.

I certainly don't want to take anything away from the guy because he has a proven track record. However, I wouldn't go so far to say that he's as good an author as he is a cook. There are a few tips in the book that are unique to Myron but is it worth to pay the required selling price? In my opinion, no. There's plenty of tips, techniques, and best practices available on the web for free that are repeated within this book. I just see it as another way for him to make money and who can blame him for that...he does suggest his rubs, marinades, etc or he gives you his "basic" recipes. His basic recipes are fairly straight-forward but that's all they are, fairly basic. Nothing wrong with simple but again, you can find these recipes littered throughout the web. The book is plenty entertaining but not an eye-opening experience.

I'm sure that Myron Mixon is a champion. But I do not need to be told how great he is and that no one else in the world will ever be as good at smoking as he is on every page of this book. It totally distracts from the recipes to read his self promoting egotism.

I've collected many, many cookbooks over the years on about every genre one could imagine. Since I've gone to an electric smoker I wanted more information than what came with the smoker. I saw a tv show that featured this man as a judge for competitive BBQing. He is a master BBQ cooker in every sense of the word. And, this is the only book out of over 100 cookbooks that I own, that I've read EVERY SINGLE PAGE. There is a wealth of information on TRUE BBQing. He gives us his dry rub recipes and sauces that he has used in competitions he's entered since the 90's. He is the winningest BBQer in the world! He offers tips n tricks on how to BBQ in competitions. It's a MUST HAVE book if you are a serious BBQer of a novice. His directions are crispy clear and his ingredients are available anywhere you shop. Do NOT hesitate to buy this BBQ cookbook. It is THE BEST book available anywhere. In time I'll get his other book about smoking sides to go with the meats he Q's. BUY this book YESTERDAY! You won't regret it. I predict you, too, will read and study it page by page!

We absolutely love this book! I bought this for my husband who spends a lot of time smoking meat and perfecting recipes. He has spent hours reading through this and is thoroughly enjoying learning some of Myron's tricks and tips. The book is well printed with nicely done photos and recipes with all the info needed to make your own version of Myron's recipes. There is a great selection of different recipes from Fried Chicken, Ribs, to briskets and more! This was the perfect gift for my husband and I am thinking of purchasing more for friends and family!

"I Got Begin to code" by Robert Miles a while back and it is great!!! I am a new coder and love to try new things. So I decided to pick up the book to try it out. Whenever I get a book or watch a video about how to code the information is boring and loses my attention span very fast and does not have enough detail or information to let me follow along in my computer. This book was great though at keeping each part interesting and detailed so I was able to understand each part. If you dont know where to start like I did and need some help this teaches you all the basics for coding and can really help you get started for your future in web site, app, or game development before you go further. SO if you are looking for something just to have fun with or you want to become a seious coder I recommend this book.

Decent book if you're new to programming and very new to C#. Not so great if you have any familiarity with programming. Excellent book. I really enjoy his writing style.

This book discusses some good topics but it fell short of missing my expectations for learning C#. First, it starts out very slow with the first couple chapters going over what a computer is and what a programmer does. The book was too slow to get to the meat of things for my liking.But when it finally gets to discussing C# code, the entire book is on writing simple applications using the "SnapsLibrary", a library created by the book's author. This would be OK if the book went into what the library is actually doing to make things happen. But all it does is say, "To make X happen, call this method of Snaps." Yes, you can explore the Snaps library code yourself to figure out how it works but the book does not explain any of it.

The Library of America edition of the "Speeches and Writings" of Lincoln's work (vol. 1 of 2) is a splendid little contribution to the encouragement of reading the works of the would be 16th president. The volumes were edited by historian Don E. Fehrenbacher who did an excellent job in putting together these volumes of Lincoln's writings and he also has some good writings of his own. Readers should check out his book The Dred Scott Case: Its Significance in American Law and Politics by Don Edward Fehrenbacher.Lincoln was quite the gifted writer and it definitely shows through in this work. His writing was clear, articulate, and very logical. Readers can really learn a lot just from his ability to construct a sentence.This first volume covers a broad range of topics prior to his presidency from 1832-1858. The writings appear in chronological order and encompass his private correspondence, as well as his public speeches/addresses. Some of these important/famous writings included in this volume (1 of 2) are his ADDRESS TO THE YOUNG MEN'S LYCEUM OF SPRINGFIELD, ADDRESS TO THE WASHINGTON TEMPERANCE SOCIETY, His proposal for the abolition of slavery in D.C, SPEECH ON THE KANSAS-NEBRASKA ACT, the Lincoln-Douglas debates, and the infamous House Divided Speech.His speech in the House against the Mexican-American War is included and is interesting to read. After expressing his sentiment about the war, he was voted out of office and went into retirement. Also, his Eulogy on Henry Clay is interesting to read. Clay was a considerable influence on Lincoln intellectually.Overall, this volume is a delight to own. It contains a number of smaller speeches, etc. that were not discussed that are equally as good as the more famous speeches. Lincoln was an interesting man, and that interest is reflected in his writings. I highly recommend this product.

These are his own words - what better way to know the man rather other people interpretations of him. The writing style then is hard to get used to, but once you read a while the letters and speeches start to flow. I was very moved by his address to the Springfield Temperance League. Not what you would expect from someone so young (he was 33). He was full of compassion, understanding, and wise advice even then. I could read about this man for a very long time. There truly was no one else like him - then or now. No wonder people continue to write books and take such interest in him. The only politician I would ever completely trust and here you will learn why.

The book was about Lincoln speeches and abilition of slavery. It taught about about the Nebraski Bill. And the Kansasas line where the north is free and the south holds slavery. For me going to keep studying.

I'm just completely prejudiced. I love almost everything this man says. (or SAID) He was plain spoken, humble, wise, proud, committed to his nation, and his people; he was a working class stiff who made good, and he helped save a nation. His words are as relevant today as they were during his own time of great division in the country. Sometimes if seems like the rifts can't heal. And then they do. And this guy helped teach us how that's done. Yep, I'm pretty biased in favor of this man's words.

In every moment, you are making educated guesses to construct an internal, conceptual understanding of the world. You frequently mistake this conception for the genuine article. You take this for granted.In his book, we learn how Isaac Lidsky went from being a successful teenage actor on TV to losing his sight and learning to reassess every unconscious assumption he had about life as a result. Isaac contends that going blind the way that he did is one of the best things that ever could have happened to him, as he learned to see his life beyond the illusions of his mind that would have kept him a prisoner of bad luck and circumstance.As Isaac began to lose his sight gradually over the course of more than a decade, he gained uncommon insight into the layers of meaning his mind automatically added to his perception. As micro blind spots formed in his vision, his brain would do everything it could to immediately compensate for them, often with wildly inaccurate guesses (such as perceiving a urinal as a sink in a bathroom).The mind is always attempting to sort incoming stimuli into the categories it knows. When the old categories we carry are not adequate for new types of information, we run into conflict with reality. We cease to be able to communicate with each other. We make terrible choices about what to do with our lives because we cannot align our actions with what is real. As Isaac had to learn how to reinterpret his most fundamental perceptions of the world, he took less and less for granted about the way his mind worked. For that reason, he is thankful for the new outlook being blind gave him.Highly recommended for a very visible example of how the mind can change the experience of reality.

An inspired book, easy to read with touching life stories. Mr. Lidsky is an excellent wordsmith. His chapter relating life to business was special to me. Assets, liabilities, balance sheet, income, expense all have their corollaries with life and he explains it well. I appreciated his thoughts on listening as it relates to hearing. Blind people don't hear better, they listen better and that is something that we should all practice.

Very enlightening, thoughtful, and powerful book. I learned a great deal from it. Certainly much food for thought about how to live your life. I love the author’s passion and bluntness, his stories and honesty. A few chapters do feel a little too extensive in terms of analogies and stories and that’s the only reason I have this book 4 stars. This is a must read.

I have a close friend who is blind from birth and has always lived life large. I love him! Well when I heard Mr. Lidsky on Ted Talk I was so surprised that he views himself as blessed by his blindness even while he had experienced vision for many years. Anyway, I enjoyed reading about his life and it has inspired me to try hard to be a better listener!

We read this on trips, unusual, thought provoking material.
