Her Passover chapter is particularly detailed, tracing the development of the seder over the centuries, defining what "kosher for Passover" means, and giving ideas for planning the seder menu—including a vegetarian seder. Recipes for Passover include braised brisket with 36 garlic cloves and a chicken soup with fennel matzo balls, asparagus and shiitake mushrooms. Cohen is a graceful, informative writer who easily shares her enthusiasm for Jewish holiday cooking with readers. But there's a note of urgency as well. "Jewish cooking is above all bubbe (grandmother) cuisine, and through the meals that we share with our children, it is also our link to the future," she writes. I have a couple thousand cookbooks, all read if not necessarily much used, and this is one of my favorites for both, reading and cooking. It's near-Julia C. class for variety and good recipe construction. There are so many Jewish holidays that this would be a fine book to give or get at any time. I like having the recipes from Ms Cohen's other cookbooks to hand in this book, as many of the others are now out of print or available only as Kindle editions. I love Kindle, but I just can't get comfortable using an expensive e-book device in the kitchen!The recipes are harvested from everywhere and there are dishes for every part of every kind of meal, festive or workaday. Many are deliciously exotic, a good introduction to Near Eastern and Mediterranean flavors. I've had another printing of this book since 2008 and rereading for this review, was struck by how easy it now is to find any ingredient used in the book -- if Trader Joe doesn't have it, a local supermarket will. Dates, pistachios, pomegranages, feta cheese, plain yoghurt -- it's even easy to find good apples now. Surprisingly, Ms Cohen uses many quintessentially American ingredients: maple syrup, pecans, cranberries, sweet potatoes, native Americans all and mostly used by Americans: a new twist to "International."It's such a pleasure to have a cookbook written by a real cook. The attention paid to the exact ingredients that will work in the various dishes, and possible substitutes for them, is a real plus and Ms Cohen has obviously made and remade every recipe in the book -- I've never gone wrong with her advice yet. The recipe format works for me too -- ingredients boldfaced in one column to the left of the page, instructions in work order, paragraph by paragraph with the lead word boldfaced and in capitals, to the right ("Look Inside" and see for yourself). I've so far found none of the glitches so common in today's cookbooks: no ingredients listed but never used, no unlisted ingredients popping up in recipes, no contradictions in measurements.I don't think I've ever made a Cohen recipe that didn't work out, and there aren't many recent American cookbooks that can be said of. Besides... doesn't just reading "Grilled Bass with Pomegranate-Mint Vinaigrette" or "Apricot and Orange-scented Goose with Roasted Garlic" make your mouth water? Some recipes are very easy and quick, some have many ingredients and take more time, but all I've tried are straightforward and easy. This would be a good second cookbook for a niece or grandchild who's starting to get enthusiastic about cooking, or even a first one -- there are plenty of exciting, delicious, and simple sweets, which is where we all started.I'm not Jewish, but I loved learning about all the different ways Jewish holidays are celebrated in different countries, and about the histories of the holidays and the special customs and dishes that go with them, all spiced with anecdotes and quotes.

A great cookbook. There are not any pictures, but the recipes are easy to read and very well explained. The Israeli Salad is awesome as are all of the brisket recipes. I am working my way through and everything has been delish! Your family and friends will love the food you cook using this cookbook-the author knows her food!

Great recipes and historical info for people interested in tradition. It's a good read as well for those of us unfamiliar with some of the history. I've made a few things out of this book and so far so good. It's just a good honest cookbook without fluff and trendy nonsense.

It’s is a good book!!

Book arrived on time and in the condition described. My family is not Jewish but many of the recipes are from regions of Eastern Europe where my family is from.

The description of the book said it had illustrations, it did, but none of the food! If you have never prepared a dish before it really helps to know what it looks like, however it did have all the recipes I was looking for

The Index at the back of the book is the worst I have ever seen in a cookbook. No page numbers for sub-entries. What's the deal with this???

I received this book on Friday and began reading it on Saturday. It is easy to read and understand. The book provides much more guidance than promised and though I could have read through this in 3 days, I find myself comparing what I have already written to the objectives in this book, which slows me down. That is a major plus! I have close to 50 books on writing screenplays and none of them come close to the level of expertise that is found in this book. That may be due to the fact that the author teaches the subject, reads screenplays that others write and has been asked by Producers to rewrite screenplays that don't measure up. That last item is major praise. If Producers trust this author to redo a screenplay so that it meets their needs, then this person knows what they are doing. I have found that my writing is improving as I use the book as a guide. If you buy just one more book THIS is the one!

If I were stranded on a desert island with a typewriter and paper, this is the book I'd want to help me in my writing. This book is for screenwriting, but I found most of it applied to writing novels as well.Iglesias takes the challenge of making you a better writer head on. He starts out with that promise and delivers. His intent is to help you write scene by scene, paragraph by paragraph in such a way that no one could set your book down. He shows you how to ensure the reader cares about your characters and feels the character's emotions. He also points out how to make sure the reader has a takeaway that will make them talk about your story to other people.He shows how to build tension, write snappy dialog, and deliver emotional scenes. He does this by examining movies like case studies, and does it in a way that really hooks you. There are other books that examine movie plots and dialog, but this book is an order of magnitude better than the rest.This is the most influential book on writing I can think of. I re-wrote my manuscript after reading this book. If you get mired down in chapter one, skip it, but this book is a must read.For any writer out there, I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK ABOVE ALL OTHERS on the subject of writing.Do I know the Author? No. Did I get the book for free? No. Is this an impartial review? Yes. This book will full on make you a better writer, and I look forward to world filled with more intriguing, engrossing books!

I'm only a quarter my way through this, yet it already feels like I've gotten the information of 5 writing books. It's so condensed, with so many amazing points that are not bogged down with fluff. I only wish I hadn't bought the Kindle version, because I want to annotate the physical book and re-read/refer to it many times. I think I'll have to get a hard copy! Can't recommend enough!

As an aspiring novelist I have a decent library of books on the craft, and most of them are helpful in a tangential sort of way. They are more like attending a motivational speech: they give you a rush of inspiration and positive energy, but a week later it's gone.I'd resorted to a DIY approach to building stories and characters. I would collect my favorite TV shows, movies, and novels, and try to figure out what made certain stories or characters compelling. I made lists and it was the most helpful thing I'd done for my writing, but it was like a child trying to figure out the universe by studying the stars: fumbling and incomplete.Writing for Emotional Impact is the map of the universe. It's a comprehensive, practical, uninhibited manual on how to make your characters and stories hit home in the real world. If this book can't help you write a good story, nothing can. It's geared towards screenwriting, but also excellent for the novelists among us.

I don't do a lots of reviews, but this is hands down the best book for anyone looking to become a screen writer. I love this book. It is so detailed in its instructions. The information here could take a person years to learn. And it's all good stuff, the hows; the whys and the when's. It is a beautiful guide to becoming a successful screen play writer. Hello, fellow writers. I want to recommend this excellent book to you, as someone who has read countless writing how-to books. Even though this is technically written for screenplay writers, all of the advice is easily transferred to novel-writing. Karl Iglesias gives very helpful advice and shows many examples of how to evoke different emotional responses in your readers. This isn't one of those maddening "let the muse flow through you" philosophic writing tomes, - there are ACTUAL TECHNIQUES that can be applied to your novel in a practical way. The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars, is because the author does tend to repeat himself, which annoyed me slightly. However, It certainly doesn't get in the way of the knowledge you will gain by reading this book.

These recipes are wonderful, having an Austrian grandmother , a lot of the recipes take me back to the time that I sat at the kitchen table watching her bake. They were such magic to me, which I never tried to replicate due to the idea that they were too hard to make. This book takes the "too hard" element away and makes the recipes look do-able. I am looking forward to making some of those magic moment of long ago. There are no photos only recipes, therefore you can concentrate on the making and not worry about matching presentation. As the great grand-daughter of european bakers, I've been eagerly awaiting this book as my family's recipes were lost to history. I've worked through the Secrets of a Jewish Baker and everything always turned out the way grandma made it. I can't wait to begin to work my way through what I know will be fool proof recipes along with all of the helpful tips. Our Greenstein books are our go-to's for everything Jewish and then some. I've searched the world for this book for several years and am beyond excited that its now here. I grew up eating eastern european breads and pastries in NY and Miami, George's recipes always capture that long lost flavor and texture. His recipes truly are the "secrets" that have been nearly lost to time and would be if not for his and his family's generosity of sharing them with the world. It's touching to read in the latest book how his family was committed to bringing his latest project to fruition. I am forever thankful that the Greenstein family completed and published this book. I've searched everywhere, bought more pastry books than I can count, tried more recipes and still wasn't able to approximate the results that George's pastry and bread recipes consistently produce. If you follow his instructions, you too can bring a taste of the old world into your home.

This book is worth its weight in gold just for the rye sour starter recipe itself. I grew up on sour dough rye and have been trying to bake decent bread myself for years. What was missing was the rye sour, without that the bread just didn't taste the same.While the book has a few tiny glitches such as the page number for the pumpernickel should be 137 instead of the given 167, in the recipes themselves I have not found any problems so far. The cornstarch glaze was a bit too thick, so I adjusted the amount of cornstarch down a bit and now it's perfect.To me, bread making is as earthen and intimate a task as can be. Feeling the dough take on shape and consistency is not something that can be carved into absolute grams and pounds. You need to "feel" the dough which can have different needs depending on humidity and temperatures. Yet there is nothing more satisfying, at least in my opinion, than kneading a dough by hand and feeling its "life" between my hands.I simply cannot recommend this book highly enough!

Great recipes from a master, but. . . although I am an experienced baker, I still love gorgeous photos and the only ones in this book are on the covers. Disappointing, but I still like the book, would have liked it a lot more with lots of mouth-watering photos.

“A Jewish Baker's Pastry Secrets” is another wonderful and welcome cookbook from George Greenstein. His first book, “Secrets of a Jewish Baker”, as a real god-send for me, at the time I received it, as a novice baker. I enjoyed reading and trying a variety of the bread recipes.When I saw that Mr. Greenstein had another book being published, and this one involved pastry, I knew that I would have to get it and have fun making a whole new set of his tried and true recipes.The book also includes many interesting stories and much information about a lifetime of knowledge by a professional baker. This is the type of information that is generally handed down from generation to generation and it is a real honor to be able to receive Mr. Greenstein's advice and knowledge.There is a large number of recipes in the cookbook and more than I can list here. Suffice to say, it will keep me busy for a long time to come.I received a temporary digital ARC copy of this book from the publisher, Ten Speed Press, via Netgalley. I have pre-ordered a copy for myself and one as a gift for a friend. I am considering how many more copies to buy this holiday season as gifts for family and friends. It is a real treasure of a book.

Many cookbooks claim to offer professional tips and "secrets," but this one truly does. The recipes cannot be beat! Pastries like these are a dying art, but now we can all recreate them at home. Thanks to the authors who took the time to record their family's bakeshop traditions.

There are lots of instructions and many recipes but NO pictures to illustrate making some instructions difficult to imagine. Still I would give it 3 stars for helpful information I would have really like to see what each receipe should come out like but again no pictures.

I love classic bakery goods and I really enjoy the recipes in this book. The story of the family is very endearing as well. If I get more into breads, I'll check out his other book as well.

Love all of Mr. Greenstein's recipes, this book just a good as his Secrets of Jewish Baker. Thanks to his family for making this book a reality.

A lifetime of Punchers Players Punks and Prophets is undoubtedly a great collection of essays written by one of the most insightful and prophetic sports writers of our time. Ralph Wiley did a great service to sports enthusiasts publishing this collection. I'm glad to have read this book and advise others to do the same. God bless you Ralph.

If you're not familiar with Ralph Wiley and his work, then this is a great intro. A collection of columns from one of the great writers in sports. I remember exactly where I was the day he died. He was one of the industry's unsung treasures. Start here, then pick up a few of his books.

One of Ralph Wiley's favorite sports to cover was boxing he was made famous by his articles in the Oakland Tribune about Roberto Duran's famous "No mas" and his depiction of fights like Leonard vs. Hearns II. Theses pieces are what sprang Wiley's name into the infamous Sports Illustrated which he was a writer for since the late 80's. After SI he continued to have success as a columnist for ESPN.com. The columns he wrote there were extremely personal. Columns such as WWJD (What Would Jackie Robinson Do), His response to the lack of African American ownership in the new millennium expressed his built up anger of major sports. Also his article Why We Need Sports Now sent a message to American people following the terrorist attack of 9/11.The book is excellent and a great book for any aspiring journalist.

I'm glad I picked up this book because Wiley's writing is captivating.Too many of the stories in this book are from a column he did for [...], and those columns do not have the legs of his magazine pieces. Only the story about Michael Jordan and Babe Ruth was very memorable from his ESPN columns.The entries in the book from his magazine writing are amazing. Some of the best writing that I have ever read. I read the book over the past year, and his stories on the 1980s Mets, Sugar Ray Robinson and others are just terrific.It's a great collection of work by a great writer.

Talk about a compilation of one's greatest hits. It's a shame Ralph Wiley left this earth way too early, because it would have been great to see if he could have improved on what was already some of the most superlative writing I've ever read. Wiley was a king, and a great example for everyone else to follow. If you want to be a writer, read this to see what writing is all about.

Quin has an appealing writing style and writes on issues of great import. They say you should write what you know, and write real characters. Quin does both.Any disappointment with the book is more related to how it is billed then the book itself. There are a few chapters here and there that relate less to the events of the kidnapping, and simply more to the events of Quin's life, that could perhaps be edited for a more streamlined work. In a 22 chapter book, it gives nothing away to say that in the 4th chapter she is freed- this book has less to do with being kidnapped, or escaping, than the after-effects of a kidnapping on the life of a woman and geopolitical events.And for that it is an incredible resource. Though this is an engaging read, it is also nonfiction, and thus provides a great deal of relevent information on life in Yemen and the situation in an Islamist kidnapping (as opposed to a tribal kidnapping). As I contemplate possibly moving to this country, Quin gives solid warnings on possible dangers to be faced there. Additionally, there are a wealth of insights on how an individual deals with the stress of a kidnapping; how it can change their lives and bring to light new possibliies that would never have existed otherwise. Quin is not only a great writer but also an excellent researcher. I was continually amazed at her ability to uncover truth, connect seemingly disparate circumstances, and gain information form interviewees by putting them at ease and yet asking the hard questions. If you are interested in the effects of kidnapping, the situation in Yemen, or the events of the modern terrorist world, then this is an requisite book.

This book was special for me because a friend of mine was among the group kidnapped. However, the book is amazing because of what followed the kidnapping and how the author kept with her quest to find out why it had happened and who the kidnappers were. She was extraordinarily successful, which makes for riveting reading and insight into the minds of the men she hunted.

AN UPDATE to Mary Quin's (no relation) powerful story: Abu Hamza al-Masri, the London-based imam, was subsequently tried and convicted in UK courts for terrorist activity, and served a few years time (I believe the offenses were more locally-based there rather than involving Ms. Quin). Subsequently, as reported last night (Sunday, Oct. 2, 2016) on CBS' "60 Minutes" with an interview of Mary Quin, based in large measure on her post-kidnap investigations and information obtained, Abu Hamza al-Masri was extradited to the US and tried and convicted in SDNY federal court in New York and, in Jan. 2015, sentenced to life in federal prison for, inter alia, his activities in the planning and encouraging of the kidnapping of the tourists in Yemen, including Mary Quin. He resides in the Supermax prison in Florence, Colorado. Huzzah for Mary Quin!

About this book, Daniel Pipes wrote: In her mid-40s, a successful executive just placed in charge of Xerox's Color Solutions Business Unit, Quin had a taste for exotic travel that took her in late 1998 to Yemen with a group of eighteen other Western tourists. She and they had the misfortune to have their Land Cruisers driven directly into a war between the government and an Islamist outfit called the Aden Abyan Islamic Army (AAIA). The entire tourist group was taken hostage on December 28 and held for more than a day before Yemeni military forces attacked the AAIA, leading to the deaths of four tourists, two terrorists, and one soldier. Quin herself had a close brush with death, but the terrorist holding the gun in her back was hit before he could do damage to her; in an act of daring-do, she managed to pull from his still-live hands his AK-47, an act which left her a changed person. Two of my family members were held hostage and Mary Quin's description of what happened during and after that life changing event rang so true to me. She touches very delicate subjects with clarity and understanding that was obviously hard-fought. Marvelous book and I thank the author for `risking' and writing this important piece of literature.

I always over-prepare for trips and in this case bought no less than 5 books on Rocky Mountain National Park. I wanted to make sure I got in the best hikes in during the 4 days I was there without getting lost or wasting time. This fine book was very well written and by far my favorite for a quick bottom line breakdown of each hike. Loved the 1 to 5 star rating for Scenery /Trail Condition/ Child Friendly/ Difficulty/ Solitude. This along with distance, time and Outstanding Features for each hike. A clear trail map and a graph showing elevation gain across miles were the cherries on the top. Everything you need! There was also the necessary full description of each hike but that's not really needed until you hit the trail.With something like 500 choices in this massive park, I was getting overwhelmed with information while deciding which hikes to endeavor. This was the one book that made these decisions possible. The quick reference layout I described meant I could continue to look back at multiple hikes without re-reading a long description.This book was by no means a comprehensive guide to the park but was more than most visits will be able to make use of. This along with the ultra comprehensive Rocky Mountain National Park: The Complete Hiking Guide by Lisa Foster were the two books that were taking up precious space in my backpack while on-trail. Thanks to the Author Kim L. for this outstanding guide.

Loved the trip to Rocky Mountain Natl Park, and this book was our go to guide for hikes. Had nice explanations, nice pictures, elevation charts, and easy to read font. Durable pages to withstand the hikes themselves. Highly recommended

Great overall book for the park, would be nice if it went more into depth particularly with the south east Wild Basin area but I can't complain, the book does its job and does it well.

This book has a limited number of hikes...about 30. But it is organized well so you have all the info about a certain hike all in one place. Unlike some books where you have to flip back and forth to find the altitude gain, topo info, trail head, etc.

This purchased along side a NG topo are an invaluable tool.
