One of my absolute favorite books to share with my students. I still believe in the importance of the dictionary. In addition, I love what these kids do in this story, with a little motivation, ownership, and confidence to make a difference. I also have a special connection with this book and my own 5th grade teacher, Mr. Roger Close, who gifted me a dictionary. If I recall, several different dictionaries were sent to our school and we were assigned the task of using, reviewing, and providing feedback about each dictionary. Mr. Close went on to gift several of us 5th graders a dictionary that we enjoyed the most, as long as we would use it. I loved the dictionary I received because it had colorful pictures in it and the print was larger. I still have that dictionary today....35 years later.Andrew Clements is a great author as well.

This was recommended to me by a really bright eleven year-old South Korean girl who is excelling at mastering English as her second language. How could I not check it out when she was so excited to tell me about it?I liked Nick because he is so smart and creative. I loved Miss Granger because she is a great teacher, the kind who really is passionate about her job and puts in the time and effort to make sure the kids learn the most they can as her students. I loved the focus on words and the emphasis on how important they are - I, too, love dictionaries and encyclopedias! Also, the references to chess and battles were clever.The aspect of the story I enjoyed least was when tv coverage and national media coverage became a part of it all. That happens all the time over any little thing, things go viral, things become memes one day and are forgotten the next, people become famous all too easily for very little reason or substance at all, so I wanted to move beyond that very quickly.Overall, it was an interesting and fun read and I can't wait to chat to Minju about it in more detail when I see her next!

This book was on my daughter's Summer Reading List from school (2nd Grade going into 3rd)last year & I have to say it was enjoyed immensely by all of us! We would have her read a few pages every day to us(for her to practice her reading). We felt it was original & kept her attention throughout the book. The writing revealed the characters as imaginative, unique & steadfast in their decisions. You can't help but like the characters and empathize with their dilemmas. Our daughter would crack up with laughter the character dialogue & would come up with her own new names for things (which thankfully did not stick most of the time). We liked how the book ends with a flash forward scenario as well. It's a wonderful book!!

Our 12 year-old really enjoyed this one! He reads at a Grade 10 level and he can be pretty critical of books that don't hold his interest. However, when you talk with him about this book, you can tell that he liked it very much. Here's his quote about the book: "I think this was a good book from a kids point of view. The story was great I thought, although it could have been executed a little better." When pressed about what "executed a little better" actually meant, he said, "Well, I can't really think of specifics. i just wanted to sound smart. I give it an A-". :-)

Fun concept with easy to read words and engaging story-line. Addresses how words become meaningful in a fun (and child-friendly way) by having the main character re-name a pen as a Frindle! I remember reading this as a child and loving it. Definitely a good book to read and would recommend!

Avid reader. Do not understand the point of this book or why it is required reading at elementary level in so many school districts. Teacher is strict so child outsmarts assignment by creating his own word for pen. Ultimately wastes inordinate amount of school time debating whether or not he can create his own word. What is the lesson here?

FRINDLE is one of very few children's books I have ever read that can be equally intriguing to children as well as adults. The story, while a little on the absurd side at first glance, is remarkable, and as a whole, believable.Young Nick Allen decides to make a committment to himself and the world: he is going to make up a new word to replace the word "pen" and he is going to, if necessary, turn his world upside down to get others to accept this new word. He even recruits other students to take "the oath" that it is a "Frindle" and not a "Pen," and no other word will do. This peaceful protest of verbosity incurs the wrath of the school faculty and the curiosity of the local press. But Nick and his friends are determined and unmovable.This is without a doubt one of the most unique and remarkable works of American contemporary children's fiction. And I don't think I'm going too far in saying that it should have been a Newbery honor book as well. It is filled with fun, education, inspiration, an unexpected plot twist at the end, and even a cameo by one of America's favorite Late Night talk show hosts.I love FRINDLE, and I know I haven't read it for the last time.

And then the Lincoln Elementary School was not happy about it. Mrs.Granger started a war with the kids and Nicholas about the word Frindle. So then the Mrs.Chatham, The principle, went to Nicholas house. Mrs.Chatham was the black queen, Nicholas mom was the white queen. I forgot one important part, THIS BOOK IS ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS. They make a show about losing their Frindle and lots of other funny stuff too. So 100% I recommend you read Frindle Khristian A

Resident Evil: Caliban Cove (Book 2) / 9781781161869I was a big fan of S.D. Perry's first book in this series (The Umbrella Conspiracy), and Caliban Cove continues to deliver the same level of enjoyment and superb writing. I'll note upfront that I haven't played the video games, so I don't know how well these books match the game-canon, but in terms of zombie novels set in the Umbrella mythos, this series delivers great action, wonderful characterization, and a lot of suspenseful thrills.Caliban Cove picks up after the end of Umbrella Conspiracy: the STARS team members who came back alive from the mansion are on the losing end of a conspiracy theory to cover up the virus spill, and one of the few allies they have decides to launch a raid on another Umbrella facility in order to get the evidence they need to clear their good name. For the raid, he needs the help of Rebecca Chambers, along with a group of genuinely well-characterized folks whose survival is NOT assured since (as far as I know) none of them ever show up in the video games. So the tension is ratcheted up immensely when Anyone Can Die.In terms of the good stuff: S.D. Perry is obviously a very skilled writer. Some franchise novelizations are very poorly written and/or poorly plotted (which, as a dedicated Aliens fan, I know all too well!), but Perry's novels are in my opinion just as good as anything else available at your local bookstore and aren't trying to coast crappy writing on the strength of the franchise label. So even if you're not a hardcore fan of the Resident Evil series, these books are genuinely good zombie/monster novels with a lot of isolation and suspense and creepy thrills to make the books genuinely engaging. The characters do occasionally engage in foolish behavior in order to facilitate the plot, but it's obvious that Perry does her best to handwave these events so that they're not *too* jarring.As far as the bad goes: My biggest disappointment with this series is its total embrace of the idea that evil people are mentally ill and that mental illness equals a dangerous menace to society. I realize that the people in charge of this franchise probably think someone would have to be "crazy" to want to zombify the world, but (a) the movies have thoroughly demonstrated other just as plausible reasons (greed, cruelty, elitism, stupidity, malice, a desire to lord over the ashes of society, etc.) and (b) blaming all this on one "mad scientist" completely obscures the many just-as-dangerous "sane" people who gave him a laboratory and zero oversight in the first place. The book even opens with a quote about how evil really needs mental illness in order to properly thrive ("Through avarice, evil smiles; through insanity, it sings.") and it comes off as unnecessary and jarring. Whether you can swim through this to get at an otherwise good story will vary by reader, I think.If you won't be bothered by the repeated hammering on mentally ill people (most of whom are far more likely to be hurt by non-mentally ill people than they are to harm anyone themselves), then there's a good zombie story in here. Note that these zombies aren't quite your "typical" zombies, as the ones in this book are able to carry and use guns and otherwise respond to stimuli (which I enjoyed for variety's sake but some purists may not).~ Ana Mardoll

The Spencer Estate lies in ruins. The surviving members of Racoon City S.T.A.R.S. department have been disbanded and driven underground. S. D. Perry's novels are their own universe. The novelizations of the games, while following the story set forth in them, does add, subtract, and change things within. For example, as you might had gleaned from my synopsis, S.T.A.R.S in Perry's verse isn't Racoon City's version of S.W.A.T., but are instead a national task-force that work with their branch's local police department. It should also be noted that Perry was writing these novels while the early games were being made and released. So do keep all that in mind.Following that, let's talk about the characters. As noted, the story follows Rebecca, the only surviving Bravo. The surviving Alphas (except for Brad, who had skipped town) do make appearances in the beginning of the story. However, after the attack on Barry's home, they no longer play a part in the story. Instead they are replaced by Exeter S.T.A.R.S. members.Captain of the Exeter branch, David Trapp is a friend of Barry's from training. Having been tipped off about the situation at Caliban Cove by the mysterious Trent, David leads the operation, angered by Umbrella's bribing of S.T.A.R.S. He's the Chris of the new characters.Karen Driver is the Jill of the team. Intelligent (though one of her actions mid-way through the operation does call this into question) and calm, she's not much of a believer in superstitions. However, Karen does carry an old World War II-era hand grenade with her for luck, a heirloom from her father. And yes, the grenade is a Chekhov's Gun.Having served with S.T.A.R.S. for just a little over a year, Steve Lopez doesn't just fill the Rebecca role of the group (in the experience department, not the medic role), he also serves as a tiny love-interest for her.Out of all the new characters introduced, I have to say, I found John Andrews to be my favorite. David and John are the most developed of the four, Steve and Karen only being there to fill their roles in the story. A big, muscular man who looks after his teammates, John is the Barry of the group.The final character introduced is Nicolas Griffith, the villain of the story. He is your standard mad scientist, wanting to release his strain of the t-virus to, in his own words, "bring peace to the world." In a way, one can say he is Wesker before Wesker (remember, this was released years before Resident Evil 5 was even a thought at Capcom). However, he doesn't have the same personality that Wesker brings, making him little more than, as stated earlier, a standard mad scientist.Being a Resident Evil novel, it of course brings in t-based B.O.W.s. However, there is only one proper t-zombie. Instead, the main threat are a new form of t-zombies: the tri-squads. Tri-squads are a form of more intelligent zombies, though not by much. Working in teams of three, they are able to use guns and follow commands. However, they need explicit orders from a higher intelligence to work to their fullest. Once they finish their orders, they just stand about like a standard zombie.Caliban Cove also introduced a new type of Hunter: the Ma7s. They really don't have much of an impact on the story, being released near the climax and quickly being killed. There is also the Leviathans, a water-based B.O.W. They really don't have much of an impact on the story. One shows up at the start of the operation, destroying the raft used by the team and almost eating John. The last mention of them is at the end of the story, being disposed of by the S.T.A.R.S. reinforcements.Overall, I like the fact the novel follows Rebecca. Considering the fact she has only played a role in two of the games and hasn't shown up following the Mansion Incident, it's nice to see an original story following her past her last appearance, even if it is non-canon to the games. However, the story is just average. There is nothing to set the novel apart from others in the genre. Most of the characters are two-dimensional and the story is nothing to write home about. Really, the only selling point is the fact it is an original piece of fiction following Rebecca.

I was so prepared to love this book being a self reliance buff myself with strong libertarian views. A real let down. Though well crafted ( which makes me think she had a lot of help ) it was obviously written by a very young, arrogant young lady with very limited life experience. The advice she gives in the "Law" section is absolutely the most ridiculous stuff I have ever read. Running around threatening people in the middle of the night and damaging private property is not going to end well for you. I like the spirit of the book, and the message has value overall, but the content and details border on silly sometimes.There are better books with more practical advice for achieving self sufficiency and dropping out of the rat race. There have to be. I could write a better one I'm sure. As a forty year old man that has been growing his food, heating my house with wood, and avoiding employment for many years, there are times when I was just shaking my head at the bad advice in this book.Putting all that aside, the biggest repudiation of this book comes not from me or anyone like me, but from the author herself! At the end of the book, decades after it was written, the author adds an addendum essentially telling us that the book is silly, it was written when she was young and stupid and she takes most of it all back!! If it weren't for that, I might possibly give this book 3 stars, just for having spirit if not content. But imagine selling someone a book, and after he/she reads it, you inform them that everything you just told them was wrong. It would be an outrage if the whole thing weren't so silly, lol. "OK you just paid money, here's my product BTW its a piece of junk!". That is exactly what the author of the book has done.

I've loved this book for years. It's humorous and inspiring. The advice is, however, dubious - things were very different in 1978, and I feel that you'd run the risk of making yourself sick/injuring yourself (not to mention poaching endangered species) by following it if you don't know what you're doing, which seems like a lot of unnecessary trouble. But, you can see the process and figure out things for yourself based on your resources and environment if you're so inclined.

I thought this would be an interesting book about living off the grid with lots of good advice and ideas. Instead it was just a smartass view of two lazy people who seemed to look at life like they were being forced to live it. I threw it out.

A lot of hunting info - not a good book for someone who does not want to kill animals.

This is a bit disingenuous a title. If you are willing to live partially at the expense of others, it is doable. However, I would have preferred that these people "do" for themselves.It is interesting in that it is an insight into how others think.

This was pretty cheesy with not much meat. It was a quick read. If you've ever had to change directions in your job plan, you've probably already figured out most of this and more.

Dad was not to be taken lightly!To all of the rest, Dolly is still one of the most quick witted and frugal people I know. She is also pleased and wryly amused that so many people still take an interest in her book.The book is dated by today's standards and definitely contains some socially unacceptable elements, but most of the basic philosophies found in the text still hold true. You might also want to keep your children from reading the "Necessities of Life" chapter.

I bought this book in early 80s it was well written and very usefull book even for a farm boy who roamed the woods at will fishing and hunting. I liked it well enough that I bnought this for a friend,

Cypriot cuisine is a wonderful Mediterranean island melange of Greek, Turkish, and Middle Eastern flavors and ingredients. The food is fresh, simple, and delicious, not overwrought. The gorgeous accompanying photographs stimulate both the appetite and the imagination.I have a great many Middle Eastern cookbooks, but this one is not a repetition of any of them. There is a chapter of recipes using fish and seafood, but being in landlocked Tennessee doesn't keep me from experimenting and substituting the protein and adapting the sauce, or preparation method to my needs. Lamb can be easily substituted with beef. I am a big fan of sumac, that wonderfully deep red and lemony-tasting spice. If you live in a small town as I do, everything is easily available online. Penzey's is one of my favorite suppliers, but there are many good ones.The recipes are arranged in the following chapters:--Salads & Snacks (14 recipes, including a brunch menu with recipes) Fresh, herbal, and colorful salads and meze components.--Savory Bakes (11 recipes, including breads and savory pastries)--Meat (25 recipes, including fowl, lamb, beef, veal, rabbit. Also hummus, pilaf, and 2 special salad accompaniments) I'll be making these with beef, pork, chicken, and turkey, which is what I have ready to hand.--Seafood (8 recipes) These are of course salt-water fish, but I'll be using some catfish and tilapia to try these, which are readily available to me, or go for frozen. You can also browse by ingredient, if you wish.I've rarely seen a cookbook by a professional chef that is so understandable and accessible to the average home cook. I have not yet cooked from any of the recipes, but I have so many collections from this part of the world and am so fondly familiar with the broad strokes of Middle Eastern/Mediterranean cooking that I'm very comfortable recommending this book. It is beautifully done with an introduction to every recipe, which I love. I'm reading straight through, like a novel, while making mental notes about what I will try first: Cicassian Chicken, Black Olive and Pepper Tapenade, or will it be a beautiful round of Spinach & Feta Borek (lovely filo pie)? So hard to choose when everything looks and sounds so good.

Brilliant book, brings the restaurant to life.

This is a beautiful book of Turkish-Cypriot recipes. The fusion of Greek and Middle Eastern flavors makes for some wonderful flavor profiles and the recipes range from decadently delicious, like a smoked bacon and medjool date sandwich, to fresh and light, like the tomato-pomegranate salad with parsley. The dessert section is a standout in particular, and there are even a couple of mixed drink recipes for entertaining (the medjool date, espresso, and fennel martini is a must try). A unique cookbook offering, and the photography is a treat.

This coloring book is perfect for the Rick and Morty themed care package I just sent to my daughter who is deployed in the desert. This book will fit perfectly in the large flat rate USPS box. Plus, the coloring book pages are legit and it will help keep my daughter busy on rough days. She really enjoys coloring and our whole family loves Rick and Morty! Great buy - thank you for helping my daughter feel at home!!

If you are a Rick and Morty Fan and love coloring then this is a must have book. The coloring book itself is about 12x12 inch squared and printed on 55lb smooth card stock style paper, pages are printed on both sides. There are several illustrations which are basic thin line art from the series included in this book and a few cartoon type cells which is what makes is so fun if you are a huge fan because you will recognize the scenes instantly, there is even an image from the very ending of the season 2 finale as well as general assorted images of the main characters and others. Some of the images do span across two pages and it's a little bit difficult to color within the crease or center of these pages but overall a really fantastic book.

Four stars because I am a Rick and Morty fan. Not 5 because the print is edge to edge and double sided. So if you want to remove a page from the book, you will have to cut it out, losing some of the picture, and losing the picture on the back. Because some of the print is in the binding, you wont be able to complete the entire page...plus, no pickle rick...Outside of that, the print is clear, detailed, and awesome!. Better have sharp colored pencils or fine tip markers to get into the details! No crayons on this bad boy :)

This coloring book is amazing. It has all the iconic scenes as coloring pages plus lots of original content. It's way more pages than I expected.The only downside is that the lines are extremely thin -- unlike most coloring books (even adult ones), this is not suitable for anyone with visual impairments at all, even fairly minor ones. For example, if you can only read large print, this coloring book would not be suitable for you. This purchase was meant for my brother, who can't read text under 20 points even with glasses on, and he'll have a lot of trouble seeing these lines.

Awesome! I'm a big Rick and Morty fan. Favorite adult cartoon. I'm a big coloring fan. I suggest photo copying the pages so you can use the book over and over. Just incase you want to change Rick's hair different colors or something. Or try a red Mr. Meeseeks one time and a yellow one next time, or whatever. Just a suggestion. Anyhow, great book.

Ooo-Weee, Rick! I'm in LOVE! The book has some singular pages, and some that are a two page spread, which is nice! A few of the pages are printed a bit lighter than the rest of the book, which is not the end of the world, just a tad annoying. My only negative comment, is that my postal delivery person, basically bent it in half to shove into my little mailbox. Luckily It didn't sit in there for too long, so it will flatten out eventually.

The book itself is detailed and funny. Good representation of the show and hours of coloring. The problem is that it was packed in a padded envelope but nothing to keep it from getting bent. The cover is torn on the spine in two places making it hard to open the individual pages without tearing them. I would have tried to get a replacement but it's a birthday gift and a new one would not have arrived in time. I suggest the addition of heavy cardboard for protection.

Good ideas for drawings, and very well-done, very faithful drawings. However, as a coloring book, not so hot. Broad, boring areas where you will wish your pencil tip was about one inch thick. Then, microscopic areas that you won't be able to accurately color without an obsidian blade.

Obviously, a book of this nature cannot be a deep treatise, but as an introductory tool and conversation starter, it is great

I love books, but I rarely buy them because I don't like clutter. This is the first coffee table book that has EVER intrigued me so much that my minimalism was overcome by my desire to have the book.

Gave this book as a gift for AP Economics teacher. He really liked it and uses some of the illustrations in his classes.
