Grace Llewellyn insists that people learn better when they are self-motivated and not confined by school walls. Instead of homeschooling, which connotes setting up a school at home, Llewellyn prefers "unschooling," a learning method with no structure or formal curriculum. There are tips here you won't hear from a school guidance counselor. Llewellyn urges kids to take a vacation--at least for a week--after quitting school to purge its influence. "Throw darts at a picture of your school" or "Make a bonfire of old worksheets," she advises. She spends an entire chapter on the gentle art of persuading parents that this is a good idea. Then she gets serious. Llewellyn urges teens to turn off the TV, get outside, and turn to their local libraries, museums, the Internet, and other resources for information. She devotes many chapters to books and suggestions for teaching yourself science, math, social sciences, English, foreign languages, and the arts. She also includes advice on jobs and getting into college, assuring teens that, contrary to what they've been told in school, they won't be flipping burgers for the rest of their days if they drop out. Llewellyn is a former middle-school English teacher, and she knows her audience well. Her formula for making the transition from traditional school to unschooling is accompanied by quotes on freedom and free thought from radical thinkers such as Steve Biko and Ralph Waldo Emerson. And Llewellyn is not above using slang. She capitalizes words to add emphasis, as in the "Mainstream American Suburbia-Think" she blames most schools for perpetuating. This is a super book if you are starting to think about homeschooling! We homeschooled our now-grown youngest son years ago when it was a really iffy, courageous thing to do (according to those who know nothing). It was the best possible choice for us and he has turned out terrifically and has a GREAT career that he loves! I shudder to think about this particular boy (we have two older) having to deal with regular school (we tried both public and private). He was above regular "gifted" and simply felt so shackled that it was miserable. When we gave him his freedom, he made great use of it. See his personal story in "Real Lives: Eleven Teenagers Who don't Go to School." Same author compiled and edited Real Lives.

The information on homeschooling listed above has changed dramatically in the past few years. Homeschooling has gone mainstream- In the U.S. as many children are homeschooled as there are charter school students (2.5 million) THIS BOOK IS AMAZING.This book gave my family the courage to homeschool and find alternative education models for our kids. If we are lucky enough to rediscover our creativity, our freedom of spirit, then we must grieve those things in order to reclaim them in our lives. We regret the years of our youth lost to 'learning', and wonder why we couldn't have spent our precious time doing the important stuff.No matter your age, this book will be a liberating experience. If you are still in school, or know someone who is, this book will also be a thoroughly helpful guide to taking control of their lives.This book ought to get ten stars out of five. It is absolutely brilliant, it's honest, it's helpful, it's inspirational.

I started home-educating before there was even a trend--back in the 1980's. Though I am most likely not an example of the demographics that Grace wrote about, I benefited greatly by the freedom that the book availed. The reason this gets only four stars is that he makes all sorts of claims about "god", reality and such that he cannot know. It makes him sound a little silly at times. Like a petulant infant that has a bone to pick with existence and doesn't care about the facts. I wish he'd just stick to those facts. When he does he's got a great knock out punch

I have a great deal of books that are copyright free as I use pieces of the graphics in artwork. To do this you must scan the image first. The proplem is the quality of the paper these illustrations are printed on. It's hardly WHITE so once scanned you are required to go through the laborious task of photoshoping the background out. All to save a few pennies in it's production. It's a shame. If you are purchasing this book for scanning I would keep looking.

rubbish without color,all the pictures could be found on the internet. don't buy it next time. otherwise you be disappointed.

This book reads like a mystery novel, but is a beautifully written, insight piece of history. Weaves together the lives of four strangers, connected by the Atlantic trade and the economic demands of the 18th century. Can't recommend enough.
