I got this book for my 9-year-old son's birthday. He has been wild about pirates, tall ships, and anything navy almost his whole short life, and we have books about it, movies about it, attended tall ships festivals, and even sailed on a tall ship, but this book has taught us much! I especially like the decriptions of the various jobs aboard a 17th century tall ship. Do you know what the Bosun does? And the master? Jobs on board from Captain to all-purpose boys are explained. How did they arrange and cook meals on months-long voyages to pick up cargo from foreign ports? How did they weather storms aroung the Cape of Good Hope, and even survive shipwrecks? How do they fit hundreds of crew, passengers, and that all-important cargo on those ships? Did you know why the cooper is a very important job on a ship? And you have to keep them all disciplined and busy to avoid trouble like mutiny. Every-day life at sea is described vividly, detailed pictures and diagrams of the ships teach you names and purposes of all parts, and your assignment as captain of the ship describes the European/Indian trade in spices, silks, and other luxury goods in the 17th century as the reason for these often dangerous, always arduous, and sometimes tedious voyages. We will read this over and over, and learn more each time. I am so glad I found and purchased this book.
